  4. MCAS Survival Words • Describe: tell them what you know. • Explain: tell how and why. • Identify: recognize and explain • Analyze: separate into parts and explain. • Argue: prove point by using facts. • Illustrate: Give examples of. • Trace: list in date order.

Plan of Attack • Read question at least 2 times. • Highlight key terms. • Determine what they are asking for. • Determine what information is given. • Choose your method of computation. • Estimate your answer; have an idea of what your answer should be. • Check your math. • Make sure answer is in complete sentences. • Make sure answer is in correct units. Such as number of pencils, length of hair, feet, inches,gallons,numbers,boys, girls, etc……….

  7. How we respond. • “I know this because” • Show all work. Every calculation. • Outline your plan of attack. • Explain why chose to solve the problem a particular way. • Check and recheck your answer. • Review response for spelling and grammar.

Show me what you got! • Weekly review of open ended response questions. • Peer corrections: • Others will grade your responses using the rubrics provided. • Student developed questions: • You create an open response question to be graded using the rubric provided by the state. • Teaching Assistants • If we get really good at this, you can help me with my younger students.
