Thomas Edison cominci la sua carriera d'inventore a Newark con il tasto telegrafico e migliorando apparecchiature telefoniche, ma la sua invenzione pi celebre fu senza dubbio quella del fonografo nel 1877. Nel 1891 costru il Cinetoscopio: attraverso un piccolo foro nell'apparecchio si vedeva un breve filmato per un penny.
