  1. Hamlet Playlist project By Alvin Parker 1A 3/11/13

  2. Hamlet The main character in the play, and the one who drives it forward. He can be described as upset because of the grief of his father’s death, mourning the longest over it.. Gertrude to Hamlet~ “Good Hamlet, cast thy nighted color off, and let thine eye look like a friend on Denmark. Do not forever with thy vailèd lids Seek for thy noble father in the dust. Thou know’st ’tis common. All that lives must die, Passing through nature to eternity.” (I, ii) ~She asks Hamlet why he still grieves on his father when everyone has moved on and there is a new king.

  3. Hamlet’s song: “I know... what you didI know… Take a look at what you did Cause I know everything..I know everything..I know everything..I know everything..I know everything..I know everything..I know everything..I know everything..” “The Knowing” by The Weeknd http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsdmtOYtxNk Taken from different parts of the song; through Hamlet , it explains how Hamlet knows the truth about Claudius murdering King Hamlet and the destruction it caused to Hamlet himself.

  4. Fortinbras Prince of Norway whose father was killed by Hamlet’s father. He is important because he is a contrast to Hamlet; decisive and strong willed soliloquy by Hamlet comparing himself to Fortinbras’ ~ “Witness this army of such mass and charge Led by a delicate and tender prince, Whose spirit with divine ambition puffed Makes mouths at the invisible event, Exposing what is mortal and unsure to all that fortune, death, and danger dare, Even for an eggshell.” (IV, iv) ~Hamlet explains that he needs to stop procrastinating in his mission and take lead of Fortinbras, who in fact, is leading an army, knowing he may die, with his head held high; and could be, for no reason at all.

  5. Fortinbras’ song: “..this ain'tnothing, but it’s all I need.. I ain'tscared of the fallI've felt the ground before.. ..I was born to be reckless” “The Fall” by The Weeknd http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnLvedoSGIY Taken from different parts of the song; it explains how Fortinbras has been through so much (or many battles) and he is not afraid of failing because he has already met his downfall (the death of his father could be used as an example).

  6. Claudius Uncle of prince Hamlet and brother to King Hamlet whose intent was to become king and have the queen; which he gained by murdering the king. He is the main antagonist and tries to anticipate Hamlet’s next moves but cannot. soliloquy of Hamlet about Claudius when he compares the difference between Claudius and King Hamlet to his mother ~ “..Here is your husband, like a mildewed ear blasting his wholesome brother. Have you eyes? Could you on this fair mountain leave to feed and batten on this moor? Ha, have you eyes? You cannot call it love, for at your age the heyday in the blood is tame, it’s humble, and waits upon the judgment. And what judgment would step from this to this?” ( ~ Hamlet yells in disbelief how she goes from a great man like his father to a nothing like Claudius. It disgusts him.

  7. Claudius’ song: “We all dream one day we kings and queensWe all dream one day we kings and queensMy homiesmade it, we just young, living the dreamMy homiesmade it, we just young, living the dream ..I know I ain’t perfect, I’m out here working for the throne” “Kings & Queens” by Tyga http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hA6jDzjwDMs These lines explain that everyone dreams of being on top (king/queen). And now that they, or Claudius in the way of Hamlet, is finally “living the dream” as a king, even though he “isn’t perfect” because he murdered his own brother to gain the crown.

  8. Ophelia Young daughter of Polonius and sibling to Laertes. She is the love of Hamlet and becomes a pawn by her father through the play to find out why Hamlet is crazy. She is the most innocent and caring in the play. Laertes to Ophelia ~ “Then weigh what loss your honor may sustain If with too credent ear you list his songs, or lose your heart, or your chaste treasure open to his unmasteredimportunity. Fear it, Ophelia. Fear it, my dear sister, and keep you in the rear of your affection, out of the shot and danger of desire. The chariest maid is prodigal enough if she unmask her beauty to the moon. Virtue itself ’scapes not calumnious strokes. The canker galls the infants of the spring too oft before their buttons be disclosed. And in the morn and liquid dew of youth, contagious blastments are most imminent. be wary, then. Best safety lies in fear. Youth to itself rebels, though none else near.” (I, iii) ~ Laertes tells Ophelia that she needs to save herself from Hamlet’s “lies” of affection for her, and that she is a young untouched treasure and needs to remain that way or she’ll earn a bad reputation for her actions.

  9. Ophelia’s song: “I would do it, push a button Pull a trigger, climb a mountain Jump off a cliff, cause you're my baby I love you, love you, a little bit I would do it, you'd say it You'd mean it, I would let you do it It was you and I and not only.. I think I'm a little bit, little bit A little bit in love with you But only if you're a little bit Little bit in love with me..” “Little Bit” by Drake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dkzq-LcTK4 She is in love with Hamlet, and he has also declared his love for her. She would do anything that he asks, but eveyone is telling her to keep away and that he is using her feelings; but in fact Hamlet really was “a little bit in love” with her. “Innocence”

  10. Laertes Son of Polonius older sibling to Ophelia. He, alongside Fortinbras, is a contrast to Hamlet in the play. The death of both his father and sister are very obvious fuels to his spontaneous rage in the end of the play. Laertes to Hamlet before they fence~ “I am satisfied in nature, Whose motive in this case should stir me most To my revenge. But in my terms of honor I stand aloof, and will no reconcilement till by some elder masters, of known honor, I have a voice and precedent of peace to keep my name ungored. But till that time I do receive your offered love like love and will not wrong it.” (V, ii) ~ He tells Hamlet that he does accept the apology given before him, but he still wants revenge; he wants to see his downfall.

  11. Laertes’ song: “Go To Sleep” by Eminem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnIj3t8PMgc “I ain'tgonna eat, I ain'tgonna sleepAin'tgonna breathe, 'til I see what I wanna seeAnd what I wanna see, is you go to sleep in the dirtPermanently.. ..So we gonna beef, and keep on beefing, unlessYou're gonna agree, to meet with me in the fleshAnd settle this face to face, and you're gonna seeA demon unleashed in me, that you've never seen..” This is a big play in the anger Laertes has for Hamlet. When he returned from school his first instinct was to kill Hamlet and every time they met before the final end of the play there was a purpose to kill in his actions. “recklessness”
