  2. Plot Summary Janie Crawford,a middle aged woman returns to her hometown in Eatonville, Florida after a long time of absence. When she returns she is overwhelmed with the gossip of the local town people, about her young husband Teacake. When she arrives at the house she is met by her best friend Phoeby Watson and the conversation frames the story that Janie relates.

  3. Characters • Janie Mae Crawford • Tea Cake • Jody Starks • Logan Killicks • Pheoby Watson • Nanny Crawford   • Mr. and Mrs. Turner  • Sam Watson • Leafy Crawford • Amos Hicks • Motor Boat • Hezekiah Potts • Dr. Simmons • Johnny Taylor • Annie Tyler and Who Flung • Mr. and Mrs. Washburn • Nunkie

  4. Themes, motifs, and symols Speech and silence- after Teacake became mayor, Janie discovers her ability to define herself by her speech involvement with the people in the community, she learns that silence is also a source of empowerment. The community- as the story progresses the author allows the reader to hear the input of the porch sitters, who gossips and hypothesize about Janie’s independence and strong will. Though she communicates greatly with the locals, she longs to be involved in their social gatherings. This is one thing she sacrifice because she cares what people think about her.

  5. Janie’s hair- represents three things. Independence and defiance, in the town she resides it is not looked upon for a woman to wear her hair down at her age. A phallic symbol, her braid is constantly described in phallic terms and functions as a symbol of a typically masculine power, which blurs gender lines and poses a threat upon Jody. The straightness of her hair, its Caucasian characteristics allows her to have a different kind of leadership than the norm.

  6. In depth characterization • Janie- When the novel begins Janie is alone. The novel is not the story of her quest for a partner but instead a quest for a secure sense of independence. At the end of the story she returns home as a strong secured woman, but at the beginning she is unsure of her identity. • Teacake- The catalyst. Encourages Janie to reach her goals by not stifling her personality, instead he encourages it, introducing her to new experiences and skills in life. • Jody Starks- The opposite of Teacake. He is mean and concieted. He tried to dominate his surroundings, he marries Janie not because he loves her but for her usage to him.
