  4. Policy Education Fora SA plans to begin policy education fora as part of its increased engagement in the area of advocacy and thought leadership. GCC’s TG’s are leading the way. Seek SEC as one active partner. Two fora are under discussion/development: India 2014 Policy education forum with focus on OpenStand and eHealth themes to be held at same time as BOG meeting in Feb-Mar Collaborative activity with IEEE internal groups, such as BOG, GCC, India Regional team, SEC, eHealth team, OpenStand team. External partners such as ITI and NIST are also key. Objectives for the forum are under development and SEC input is sought; one objective can be to offer something that can become an ongoing activity. India forum expenses have been included in 2014 SA budget.

  5. Policy Education Fora (cont’d) Africa 2015 Still in exploratory stage Corporate team led by Gordon Day made recent trip to Africa. Follow-up items discussed with SA included interest at Kenya Bureau of Standards in developing an MOU with the IEEE One element of MOU might be IEEE engagement in KBS Standards Awareness workshops at universities Forum ideas/options include: Policy education forum similar to one in India in 2014 Larger, IEEE Pan-African Technical Forum In collaboration with Corporate, TAB, and Conferences TG 5 on Public Policy and TG 4 on International organizations are exploring Africa forum Group of volunteers in SA have expresed interest in exploratory trip to Africa in 2014. 6. SIIT Standards Education Panel SEC Ad Hoc: YatinTrivedi, David Law, James Irvine, Howard Wolfman, Jennifer McClain, Rona Gertz, Sue Vogel, Susan Tatiner Ad Hoc-proposed topic and date/time to SIIT Operating Committee were accepted Standards Education panel will be held mid-day on Wednesday, 25 September 2013, second day of IEEE-SIIT 2013. TOPIC: What Does Industry Want from Standards Education? How important is it that graduates appreciate standards? While the importance of standards to industry is well understood, standards rarely form a major part of the engineering curriculum, with universities focusing on teaching fundamentals. This panel will consider the needs of industry in terms of standards education. Are standards so specific to different industry segments that training is best conducted post-graduation, or is it such a key part of the engineering ecosystem that all graduates should understand their importance as a core part of the degree?
