  2. Theory? Why? • You can’t read music without it. • Playing piano is all about being able to read music. • Someday, you may want to sound like this…….

  3. Ahh….here’s why!

  4. Let’s Begin!! This is the treble clef. When playing piano, the notes that are shown on this line will be played with your right hand. This is the bass clef. When playing piano, the notes that are shown on this line will be played with your left hand.

  5. Types of Notes & Rests This is a whole note and whole rest. They typically get 4 beats. = This is a half note and half rest. They typically get 2 beats. = This is a quarter note and quarter rest. They typically get 1 beat. =

  6. More Notes & Rests This is an eighth note and eighth rest. They typically get ½ of a beat. = This is a sixteenth note and sixteenth rest. They typically get ¼ of a beat. = For the moment, we won’t work with these very much.

  7. Key Signatures Here’s that treble clef again! This shows how many beats in each measure. This shows what kind of note counts as 1 beat.

  8. WHAT?!?!?!?! This shows how many beats in each measure. So, in this case, there are 4 beats. This shows what kind of note counts as 1 beat. The 4 tells us that it’s a quarter note. But what’s a measure????

  9. Measures & Counting There’s that pesky treble clef again! Who remembers what this means?? One measure Whole note Half notes Quarter notes
