Soil Survey Helping People Understand Soils NCSS Standards What are They? Why are They Important? David Hoover Acting National Leader, Soil Survey Standards
Why is this topic Important? Soil Survey Helping People Understand Soils • The National Cooperative Soil Survey is built upon 100+ years of experience. • It is a respected, science-based inventory of the nation’s soils. • The scientific basis is embodied in our standards. • To be successful, you need to understand this. • Soil Survey Office Leader (your boss) is charged with certifying your work meets our standards.
Quality Control / Quality Assurance Soil Survey Helping People Understand Soils • Discussed in NSSH Part 609 • QC – Takes place in the Soil Survey Office • Your work must meet NCSS standards. • QA – Takes place during periodic reviews by your assigned Data Quality Specialist. Must be certified by the MO Leader as meeting NCSS standards.
Objectives Soil Survey Helping People Understand Soils • You will be able to: • Describe what is meant by “NCSS Standards”. • List at least 4 documents containing NCSS standards. • Explain why standards are critical to the NCSS.
What is a Standard? Soil Survey Helping People Understand Soils “NCSS standards are common or shared procedures that enhance technology transfer, data sharing and communications among soil survey participants.” National Soil Survey Handbook, 600.02

If They Don’t Agree - Which Version is Official” Soil Survey Helping People Understand Soils • SSM 1993 • k Accumulation of carbonates This symbol is used to indicate the accumulation of alkaline earth carbonates, commonly calcium carbonate. • 12th Edition Keys , 2014 • kAccumulation of secondary carbonates This symbol indicates an accumulation of visible pedogenic calcium carbonate (less than 50 percent, by volume). Carbonate accumulations occur as carbonate ilaments, coatings, masses, nodules, disseminated carbonate, or other forms. • kkEngulfment of horizon by secondary carbonates This symbol indicates major accumulations of pedogenic calcium carbonate. The suffix kk is used when The soil fabric is plugged with fine grained pedogenic carbonate (50 percent or more, by volume) that occurs as an essentially continuous medium. The suffix corresponds to the stage III plugged horizon or higher of the carbonate morphogenetic stages (Gile et al., 1966).
Summary Soil Survey Helping People Understand Soils • Standards - Provide scientific basis for soil survey. • Common standards enable a uniform program. • Taxonomy – common language, tech transfer. • Soil Survey Manual – Basic principles of soil survey • Nat. Soil Survey Handbook – Policy & Procedures • Field Book – Convenient field reference. • Lab Methods Manual – Behind our operational definitions. • Other Documents – Integrate other discipline’s science.
