HEADS OF THE CHURCH Eph. 1:19-23
Some Of The Biggest Problems… • In the earthly church are the desire for prominence and to have my own way. • From the apostles question, “Who is the greatest among us”, to Diotrophes, to today’s MVP. This hasn’t changed as much as it should. • The problems play out in different ways.
Apostolic Succession • When we study this, it isn’t to see who took Judas place as much as which place can I take. • Judas to Mathias – Acts 1 • James to Paul? James dies in 12:2, Paul chosen in ch. 9. • Whose place did Barnabas take? Acts 14:14 • James, the Lord’s brother – Gal. 1:19
Apostolic Realization Apostles weren’t “the boss”. Jesus is still “head.” Limits on authority – “shall have been bound in heaven…” No distinction between them – Gal. 2:6f; 2 Cor 12:11-12 Apostolic limitation – They revealed the mind of God – Eph. 3:1ff. How many times must that be done?
A Temporary Position • One who traveled with Jesus, and who witnessed the resurrected Lord – Acts 1:21-22. • One who performed the “signs” of an apostle – 2 Cor. 12:12. • No “new” revelation, no modern day miracles. • No exaltation for men or women today.
But…We Install a Corporate Structure • CEO Paul. • His Executives were Timothy, Titus, Silas. Each of them ruled an area, and had their own assistants. • With Board meetings – Acts 15 • Again, a desire to enforce our will on the majority.
God’s Way Still Stands • Christ is still head, and rules thru His word – Rom. 1:16 • Ministers, elders, deacons and members follow Him. • No church exercised dominion over another. • Macedonia and Greece encouraged to assist Jerusalem during famine. • God’s way works. And works best.
