ITM Faculty Club – why? • Encourage exchange of ideas, experiences and findings • Inspire to, learn from, and create mechanisms for improving our academic quality • Networking – building the ITM community • A forum for inspiration • Communicate and reflect on joint school initiatives • A forum for gathering feedback from faculty on new KTH initiatives, rules and regulations

New views on faculty development at KTH • Much stricter process before approval of opening a new faculty position • Strict control by KTH Faculty council and its Employment Committee • A faculty position: • Tenure track: Assistant professor, associate professor, professor • Promotions handled by the Promotion committee • Adjuncts • Adjunct and guest professors • Researchers • Still up to the school to decide and handle • New support program: “Forskarprogrammet”

A new instrument: Faculty development plans • Each school is supposed to maintain strategic faculty development plan • Mapping of all existing faculty positions for each year and eight years ahead (a table template is provided). Gender is also mapped. • Planned new recruitments over the coming eight years and within the existing financial frame • Total resources (basic education; research and research education; external short term, external long term) • Within ITM, these plans are to be developed and maintained on unit level, then aggregated to department and school levels

  6. Opening a new faculty position • Researchers – up to the school • All other faculty positions: • Describe relation to strategic faculty development plan including how the new position fits into existing activities • Describe reason behind the position in terms of education and research and specify the subject area • Provide an analysis of the subject area in relation to external competitors, including potential development within the area • The subject area should be illuminated in a gender perspective • Funding and work plan for the first 4 years • Demonstrate that funding and other conditions are met also in an 8 year perspective

Opening a new faculty position • Funding requirements • ”In the normal case, faculty positions (excluding researchers) should be financed by basic education and faculty funding and not be dependent on external funding” • Required funding levels • Professor: 2 MSEK • Associate professor: 1,5 MSEK • Assistant professor: 1 MSEK • Start-up package for new recruitments; “on the level of a new PhD student” • Amount of teaching • 20 – 60% except for assistant professor where it is max 30%

  8. Faculty at ITM The total ITM faculty is made up of 201 persons, whereof 20% (41) are women and 80% (160) are men. 17 of the faculty will retire up to 2017 => need to recruit personnel!

  9. Assistant professors Currently: 5 assistant professors, of which all are men

New faculty positions • Assistant professors = 8 • Associate Professors = 5 • Lecturer (adjunkt) = 2 • Note, that a large faculty will be recruited in connection with the building up of the research and education in Södertälje! • In the current plan there are 8 new faculty positions • 3 professorships and 5 associate professors

  11. Promotions • Handled by the promotions committee • Key criteria for promotion to associate professor • A PhD degree, • Pedagogical skills, • Ability to attract funding for and run research projects • Ability lead education and research activities

Promotion • Application for promotion to Professor • The Faculty Council asks the School to give a statement on whether the promotion is desirable, taking into consideration the position´s duties, the focus of the operations, the applicant´s ability to lead educational and research activities and their ability to collaborate with the surrounding society • Application for promotion to Associate Professor • The Faculty Council asks the School to provide a statement regarding applicant´s ability to lead educational and research activities and their ability to collaborate with the surrounding society

  13. KTH Faculty assembly • “In order to ensure and enhance the faculty’s access to information and to influence processes and decisions, KTH has a Faculty Assembly. The primary task of the Assembly is to firmly establish and communicate issues of particular importance with KTH’s faculty.” • The Faculty assembly has 70 members of which 8 will be ITM representatives • The ITM representatives of the KTH Faculty assembly should use the ITM Faculty Club as a natural point of access to our faculty.

  14. Election procedure to • June 2: ITM nomination committee decides on their proposal for ITM delegates in the KTH faculty assembly • June 3: Election procedure, voting list and the committee’s proposal are announced • June 4-11: Time for nomination for additional candidates • June 12: All nominations are presented and the web-based election system is opened. • June 12-22: Election period • June 25: Election result is presented
