  4. Arrival & Dismissal Procedures For the safety of our students and parents, please DO NOT get out of your car to pick up or drop off students. Upon arrival 6th grade students will: - Go to the cafeteria for breakfast (7:30-7:55) or - Go to the multi-purpose room Afternoon car riders are not allowed to get into a car that is not along the curb.

  5. CHAMP Policy All behaviors and expectations for your student will be explicitly taught and reinforced all year according to our CHAMP Program. C – Conversation (Level 0 – 4) H – Help (How the student gets help.) A – Activity (What the student should be doing.) M – Movement (What the students’ bodies should be doing.) P – Participation (What the students’ expected level of participation should be.)

  6. CHAMP Example Hallway CHAMP C – Conversation is 0 (No talking) H – Raise hand and wait to be called on A – Walking in a straight line facing forward M – Moving forward without gaps in line P – Actively focusing on destination without distractions

  7. Dress Code • Dress codes must be followed at all times. Students not in compliance will be asked to go to the nurse’s office for a change of clothes. • Please see the district guidelines for Secondary students in the on-line handbook for a complete list of dress codes violations.

  8. Discipline Policy Level I Discipline Forms are for minor behavior issues. Consequences for Level 1 offenses are as follows: - First Level 1 -Write-up, parent phone call and silent lunch the following day. - Second Level 1 -Write-up, parent phone call and morning detention from 7:15-7:50am. -Third Level 1 –Write-up, parent phone call and after school detention from 3:10-4:00pm After the third (3rd) Level I offense, the disciplinary action becomes a Level II offense and the student is referred to the office.

  9. Discipline Policy (continued) Morning and after school detentions will be held by a 6th Grade teacher. Morning detentions will be held from 7:15-7:50am and the student must be present at 7:15am in order to receive credit for the detention. After School detentions will be held from 3:10 – 4:00pm on Thursdays. Students must be picked up promptly at 4:00pm in the front of the school. The best case for everyone is if your child monitors his or her own behavior and doesn’t have a need for detention.

  10. Grading Policy 6th Grade Grading Policy is the same as all Middle School Grading Policies. Progress reports come out every three weeks. In each three weeks progress report, students receive a minimum of two daily and one major grade. Be aware that the first progress report of each nine weeks can be scary if there is a failure to turn in work or low daily and/or major grades have occurred. It is vital for a student to keep up with their work and STUDY when necessary.

  11. Grading Policy (continued) The weighted average is as follows: Semester 1: (3 x 1st 9 week average) + (3 x 2nd 9 week average) + Semester Exam /7= 1st Semester Average Semester 2: (3 x 3rd 9 week average) + (3 x 4th 9 week average) + Semester Exam/7 = 2nd Semester Average Final Grade: Semester 1 + Semester 2 = Yearly Average *2ndSemester Exam exemptions are based on grade average and absences.

  12. Homework Policy Homework will vary by subject and be assigned as needed. Students are responsible for writing their assignments in their agenda. Students are encouraged to read at home on a daily basis. Homework in Math will count as 1 daily grade each 9-week period. A percentage of the number of assignments completed out of the total number assigned will be entered into the grade book.

  13. Late and Missing Assignments Assignments not turn in on time will have points deducted for being late. 1st day-10pts, 2nd day-20pts, 3rd day-30pts. When a student does not complete or turn in an assignment after three days, a zero will be entered in the grade book and the student will have to attend ZAP (zeros aren’t permitted) to make up the missing assignments. When the assignment is completed the zero will be replace with a grade no greater than 70. ZAP is held on Fridays during elective times.

  14. Water Policy Since PE Elective is outside part of the year, students are encouraged to bring water bottles to school; however, sports drinks are not allowed in PE or the classroom. Water bottles are to remain in the student’s backpack during class.

  15. Cell Phone Policy Students may bring their cell phones to school, however they must be kept in their backpacks and turned OFF. Teachers are obligated to confiscate any phone seen or heard, and it must be turned into the office. TEXTING is absolutely prohibited.

  16. Curriculum We are delivering 6th Grade Middle School Curriculum according to the pace and content of all Middle School 6th Grade Programs. The pacing is fast and contains new concepts, therefore it is extremely important that students stay focused and on task. Our worst problem is talking during instruction and independent work which interferes with everyone’s learning. Please help us reinforce the need for self-control at these times. Students will have other opportunities to talk about on-task activities.

  17. Example of Curriculum Pace Math Students will be exposed to a concept per day on most days vs. a concept per week. Students will have opportunities to practice these concepts in class and will regularly have reinforcing homework assigned as well. Concepts covered in the 1st Semester include: Decimals, Fractions, Percents, Statistics and Number Theory.

  18. Example of Curriculum Pace Science The following areas are covered in the 1st Semester in 6th grade. • Safety • Scientific Process and Measurement • Elements, Compounds, and Properties of Matter • Earth’s Structure and Process

  19. Example of Curriculum Pace Social Studies We have introduced Social Studies skills and Culture and are currently working on Geography. Other topics covered in the 1st semester include: Government, Economics and applying the Five Themes of Social Studies to North America.

  20. Example of Curriculum Pace ELA II – Writing Reading comprehension is the main concept of 6th Grade ELA. Students will focus on several novel studies. We are currently reading “Face on the Milk Carton” 6th Grade requires an individual Writing Portfolio on each student that includes six essays on various writing topics. There will be two narratives, one persuasive, expository, one descriptive, and one research essay.

  21. Course Failure Students who fail to maintain a yearly average of 70 in a core class will be required to attend summer school. The maximum number of classes you are allowed to take in summer school is two. If you fail three core classes you will be retained. Courses are costly ($250/class last year), spaces are limited, and transportation is not provided.

  22. Interventions and Tutorials Interventions for Tier III/SSI students will be held for Reading and Math during the school day. Students are assigned to these classes based on District criteria. Tutorials will be held after school Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:10 – 4:00pm beginning the 2nd 9 weeks. Students who are struggling will be invited to attend. Behavior issues and late pick-ups will result in the student being removed from tutorials.

  23. Supplies and Mobile Office We have asked students to build a “Mobile Office” which includes a 2” binder with a pencil bag to hold their agenda, subject notebooks and necessary writing utensils. Organization is “key” to a student's success. Please make sure your child comes to class prepared with all of their supplies.

  24. Miscellaneous Items DANCE – there will be a 6th Grade Dance at the end of the school year. Ticket sales and PTO funding help us put on this event every year. Pizza, drinks, snacks and a DJ are included. Failure to turn in or pay for all textbooks or library books will prevent attendance at the dance.
