Welcome to 10th Grade Language Arts! This course provides instruction in grammar, writing, literature, and speech. Students must bring necessary supplies, follow classroom guidelines, and check the teacher's blog for assignments and resources. Grading policy includes both summative and formative assessments, and plagiarism/cheating will not be tolerated.

  1. Welcome to 10th Grade Language Arts Instructor: Mrs. Sullivan

  2. Necessary Supplies • One notebook ( 80 pages minimum) • One folder with prongs for loose-leaf paper and 2 pockets (Writer’s Folder-may cont. last semester’s folder) • Ink pens, blue or black • No pencils allowed, except for scan tron exams • Yellow highlighter • White-Out • Textbook assigned in Sept. to be left at home for homework; class set used in class.

  3. Classroom Guidelines All students will: • Bring necessary supplies to class. • Be prompt, prepared, and polite. Please review the district’s tardy and audit policies as absenteeism may result in loss of credit! • Leave all food and drink in their lockers. • Leave all electronics such as iPods and cell phones in lockers or backpacks in the “off” mode. Violations result in the item being taken and a PBIS form/conference after school. 2nd offense-item turned into the office at the teacher’s convenience. Items may not be retrieved for a period of 24 hours. In addition, a discipline referral will be written if student refuses to give up the item or argues with the teacher.

  4. Guidelines cont.All students will: • Leave coats and hats in their lockers. No hoods or hats may be worn in class or hallways. Hats may NOT be carried to class in hand! • Use passing time wisely! Three emergency passes may be used via the student planner. Requests may be denied upon discretion of the teacher. • Assume responsibility of their own education by checking my blog or teacher for missing work due to absence. Get notes from a classmate immediately. If the absence occurs on a test day, the student should be prepared to make up the test upon return. Unit tests have only one scheduled make-up day for all students. These dates will be posted, and students must attend or receive a zero. If a student is on a school-related function, work must be submitted before the student leaves the building. • Late work will be accepted for ½ credit (formative) and a loss of 1/3 per day for summative work. HONORS is excluded except for AOW prep work.

  5. All students will: 9. Exhibit HONESTY and INTEGRITY by doing their own work. Plagiarism and cheating will NOT be tolerated! Violations will be reported to the student office via referral and placed on the student’s permanent record. In addition, the student will receive a zero on the assignment or test. 10. Exhibit appropriate behavior, language, and respect for the teacher as well as other students.

  6. iBlog Requirements • Students must check my blog www.dearbornpublicschools.org/iblog/sullivgto print out needed documents such as articles, study guides, graphic organizers, etc. • Register your email on the blog, you will get automatic notification of any new postings. • When you are absent, it is REQUIRED that you will check the blog to get your work and have the necessary materials!

  7. Syllabus Vocabulary • Weekly vocabulary from literature selections • Presented on Monday, due on Wednesday, Quizzes generally on Friday • Completed in English notebook (E.N.)

  8. Writing • Argumentative writing • Analysis essays (pre- and post) • District Common Assessment • Writer’s Notebook (W.N. Folder) • A.O.W.’s (Article of the Week)-posted on Tues., pre-writing work due on Fri.,write on Wed. in class

  9. Literature • Unit 4 DNA of Survival/Short Story & nonfiction ***Honors-add The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury • Unit 5 To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee) • Unit 6 Poetry (Thematic) ***HONORS—add The Secret Life of Bees

  10. Grammar • Daily D.L.P.’s (daily language practice) ***Agreement, comma rules • Grammar Pre- and Post-test • Focused Grammar Lessons/Practice

  11. Speech • Group Presentations • Individual Presentations/Book Talks • Formal Speech with Power point (Poetry unit)

  12. Grading Policy • 80% Summative; 20% Formative • Summative= Quizzes, Unit Tests, Final Exam, Formal Writing • Formative= Vocabulary lessons, classwork homework, notebook work ***Re-take requests must be submitted on time and only apply to tests, not quizzes. Honors classes are excluded from re-takes. Final Exams are exempt from this policy.

  13. Plagiarism Policy • All forms of plagiarism/cheating result in a disciplinary referral to the student office. The incident is placed on the student’s permanent record as academic dishonesty. • Consequences: • zero on assignment, paper, quiz or test • Multiple offenses may result in loss of credit • Detention/OSS may be assigned by administration based upon student’s record.
