  1. The Church and Kingdom! By Annabel and Shaniya

  2. Leaders • Church leaders were important and so were their roles. • They acted like royal advisors. • Church leaders and the king usually disagreed about power, money and decisions that would effect the kingdom.

  3. Friendship • King Henry II and a noble named Thomas a Becket were good friends for many years. • They hunted and entertained themselves together. • King Henry sent his son to be a page in the Becket family’s household.

  4. King Henry wanted his way • King Henry offered Becket the most important job. • The job was the Archbishop of Canterbury and it was the best job in England. • He was surprised when Becket refused to accept his offer. • Becket became very religious. • Becket refused to changes that King Henry wanted.

  5. The Change • The Church had separate law courts from the King. • If people who worked for the Church did bad things they would not be punished. • If other people did bad things they would be punished. • King Henry wanted to change that rule. • The King and Becket had violent fights over that rule.

  6. Death • Knights overheard King Henry talking to himself. • He was complaining about Becket. • Knights thought that he wanted them to kill Becket. • They killed Thomas a Becket. • They killed him at the Catherdal at Canterbury.

  7. The Shock • Everyone was shocked even King Henry because he wasn’t complaining about killing Becket. • The Pope got the King out of the Church. • Churches in England were closed for a number of years. • King Henry had a penance. • He made a public display of his guilt. • He admitted he made a mistake before the Pope could hurt him.

  8. Good News • Two years later Becket became a saint of Canterbury. • Canterbury was the best spot for Pilgrims to visit his shrine.
