  1. Biology Problem-based Learning Done By: Ng Qi Xiang and Tan Jing Han 3O1

  2. Target Students • Athletes in Track and Field • This students requires a lot of energy for physical activities thus a healthy diet is very important.

  3. Dietary Needs • Calcium • Calcium helps form and maintains healthy teeth and bones • It also helps with blood clotting, nerve signaling, muscle contraction and relaxation, and the release of certain hormones.

  4. Dietary Needs • Iron • Iron is needed red blood cells to adequately carry oxygen for use throughout the entire body. • In sports, to prevent fatigue, iron is needed by the body to make hemoglobin rich blood, which transports oxygen to the cells.

  5. Dietary Needs • Proteins • Proteins are used in movement as it is a major part of muscles. • Proteins like Collagens provide support for connective tissues. Proteins are also needed to form hormones and are needed in the immune system.

  6. Dietary Needs • Carbohydrates • Carbohydrates are very important for an athlete as it is the main source of energy. • Amylase helps break down carbohydrates into glucose (blood sugar), which is used for energy by the body.

  7. Dietary Needs • Fats: Another source of energy for the body is fats • Fat is needed in the body for the absorption of vitamins A, S, E, K, and prevent deficiencies of these vitamins. • Fats also protect organs and bones from shock and provide support for organs. • However too much intake of fats will increase the chances of developing a number of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure.

  8. Stall Analysis • Economical rice stall • Food- Curry chicken and Omelette

  9. Curry Chicken Curry Chicken : Rich in protein and also contains fats. Proteins are the primary component of numerous body tissues. They are the main component of muscle tissue. Protein helps muscle development, increases strength, and improves athletic performance

  10. Omelette • It contains nutrients such as proteins, cholesterol and vitamins. Egg is very rich in proteins essential amino acids needed by the human body especially in the yolk.

  11. Analyzing the food • These meals are good sources for proteins which are good for athletes for muscle development and also build up the immune system as well as metabolic performance. • However these meals have relatively high contents of fats and cholesterol which are not very healthy as it may lead to chronic diseases in the future if over consume. • Therefore I think that these meals could be improved to better cater to the needs of the athletes.

  12. Improved meal • More healthy dishes would be introduced to the economical stall. Vegetables contain a wide range of nutrients and vitamins which are also needed in the diet. • Vegetables for example, cabbage and spinach, are rich sources of vitamins A and C; vitamin A is essential for eyes and skin, while vitamin C is necessary to maintain a healthy connective tissue.

  13. Improved meal • Changes will also be made to the original dishes. As seen, Curry Chicken is a good source of proteins but contains high level of fats • To improve on this, Curry Chicken will be change to steamed chicken. Steamed chicken is a healthy choice as curry contains more fats. • Omelette is a good source of many nutrients proteins, iron and vitamins. To improve on the meal is to decrease the level of cholesterol. • Too much cholesterol will lead to heart disease and high blood pressure. Therefore, frying omelette with other vegetables such as onions is a healthy choice

  14. Improved meal • Carbohydrates are important in an athlete’s diet. Rice which is a source for carbohydrates is already a part of the meal. • To improve on it, side dishes such as potato which is also rich in carbohydrates will be added.

  15. Comparison • The original dish consists of Curry Chicken and Omelette which contains lots of protein as well as fats. • The improved meal not only has the protein needed but also contains more vitamins, carbohydrates as well as lesser fats and cholesterol. • In comparison the improved meal is much healthier and much more balanced. This can be seen from the food pyramid whereby fats, oil, salts and meat are required in smaller amounts compared to vegetables, fruits and carbohydrates.
