  1. EMPHASIS ON MARRIAGE Matthew 19:4-6

  2. Origin of Marriage • Not some pagan ritual or custom. • Not from some government or religious order. • It originated with the creator. • Genesis 2:18-24; Matt. 19 • Not a “command”. We don’t “have to” marry. Can be complete without.

  3. Reasons For Marriage • A help “meet”. Not all are “meet”. • To populate the earth. • Prevention of sexual immorality – I Cor. 7:1ff; Heb. 13:4. • To provide a firm foundation for society – Deut. 6:6-7; Eph. 6:4

  4. Selecting A Partner • At least 6’ tall, good earning potential, handsome, “smooth”. He comes along, and has no interest in you, or he bores you to death. • She has to be “cute”, sexy, and… • She comes along, and hates children, or can’t complete a sentence. • Be realistic and godly.

  5. Who Do You Date, And For How Long • 1. Must be eligible! • 2. Must answer life’s situations from a godly perspective. 2 Cor. 6:14f • 3. Someone you can submit to, honor. Eph. 5:22; I Peter 3:1-6. • 3. Someone you can treasure – I Peter 3:7 • 4. Someone you can “bring home” to family.

  6. Needs to be ambitious – trying to improve self and partner. Not to the point of nagging. • Needs to be dependable – a mark of maturity. Parents, employer. If they cheat on these folks, they will also cheat on YOU.

  7. Negative Points • Are they jealous or possessive? • Are they “flirty”? • Are they quick tempered? • Big spender, or stingy? • Watch him around dogs, children and flat tires. • What do your parents think of them? Your best friends, honestly.

  8. Questions • Do I love this person sufficiently to make him the primary object of my earthly affection and attention for the rest of my life? • Do I trust him enough to believe that he will love me and be true to me the rest of our lives? • Do I respect him sufficiently to be in subjection to him as the Bible teaches the wife to be? • Do I have reason to believe that this girl will be in subjection to me, allowing me to be the head as the Bible teaches?

  9. Do we have enough things in common to insure proper companionship for the rest of our lives? • Will we be able to be content with the things that can be provided on the husband’s income? • Do I want to let this boy or girl be one of the two primary influences in my child’s life? • Am I willing to accept the faults of this one?
