ERS-1 and ERS-2 missions • 17 years of ERS-1/2 SAR data in the archive • ERS-2 achieved 13 years in orbit in April 2008 ERS-2 was designed for 3 years nominal lifetime ! • Ample hydrazine ~ 50% left after 13 years • Platform preventive measures are implemented on the power system to compensate for ageing • Instruments all instruments work satisfactorily and provides useful data Good prospect to operate ERS-2 mission until 2011
ERS-2 / Envisat InSAR Tandem Exploitation of the synergy between ERS-2 and Envisat same ground track with 30 minutes time difference • ERS-2 / Envisat InSAR Tandem periods: • ERS-2 orbit is shifted by 2 km w.r.t. Envisat orbit • First period: September 07 to February 08 • Second period: November 08 to January 09

2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2005 approved 3-years extension 1995 ERS-2 2002 Envisat envisaged 3-years extension Sentinel-1 New orbital parameters The Envisat 3-years extension requests a modification of the orbital parameters in 2010 as the on-board hydrazine will be almost completely consumed by 2010. Envisat 3-years extension [2011-2013] • The following criteria were used to find a solution for extending Envisat beyond 2010: • to keep the current nominal mission for as long as possible (i.e. until 2010), • to extend the mission well beyond 2010, • to ensure the continuity of the max. number of Envisat applications beyond 2010, • to follow the mitigation rules for space debris risk at end of mission. Envisat extension: funding not yet granted

Facilitating access to Earth Observation data A constant objective: ease access to Earth Observation data • Common objective for all missions data handled by ESA: Envisat, ERS, Earth Explorers, and Third Party Missions (e.g. ALOS, SPOT-4, Kompsat-2, …) • Simplified user registration procedures for Category 1 use • Internet access to Near Real Time (NRT) data • Internet access to archived data gradually implemented (new dataset, new access systems) • Development of alternative ways to provide data (e.g. processing on demand, toolboxes)
