Topic/Audience/Purpose • By 2011, over six million students were taking at least one online higher education class as a part of their studies 1 • This research addresses the needs of graduate-level students new to online learning environments • The purpose of this research is to explore ways to exploit e-learning and decision-based scenarios to give these students a “running start” on best practices for academic collaboration in online environments 1Allen, I.   4. An experienced virtual teacher serves as mentor and guide to important concepts in each e-learning module. She will both model expert-level problem solving skills and provide coaching and scaffolded support through decision-based scenarios.

  5. Undesirable choices result in redirection to the previous set of choices… Better choices receive better reactions and further modeling…

  6. Implications • The e-learning modules would augment a larger course that involves a collaborative writing assignment for new graduate students. • Synchronous class sessions would offer opportunities for the elements of articulation, reflection, and exploration suggested by the Cognitive Apprenticeship model, as well as additional opportunities for modeling and coaching. • The successful completion of project milestones and the finished paper provide opportunity for assessment. • Ideally, this course would offered early in an online program to provide a foundation for successful academic collaboration and group writing tasks.
