  1. DHS Definitions • Any Modern Method: Includes female and male sterilization, oral contraceptives, IUD, injectables, implants, male condom, female condom, diaphragm, foam/jelly, lactational amenorrhea method, emergency contraception. Billings method, sympto-thermal method and SDM are considered modern methods. • Traditional Methods: Includes withdrawal and folk methods (locally described methods and spiritual methods of unproven effectiveness, such as herbs, amulets, etc.). Periodic abstinence has been subtracted from this grouping and presented as a separate category. • Periodic Abstinence: Includes rhythm and the calendar method.
