What is social media? • Social media is a general term that refers to a variety of internet-based applications that allow users to create content and interact with each other.  • Users may easily communicate personal information as well as other content, such as videos and photos. • Users engage with social media via computer, tablet, or smartphone.

  3. What are different types of social media? • A blog is an online journal with pages that are generally displayed in reverse chronological order. • Tumblr is an example of a blog.

  4. What are different types of social media? • A wiki is a website on which users collaboratively modify content directly from their web browser. • Wikipedia is an example of a wiki.

  5. What are different types of social media? • Social bookmarking sites allow users to organize and share links to websites. • reddit is an example of a social bookmarking site.

  6. What are different types of social media? • A social network is a website that allows people with similar interests to come together and share information, photos and videos. The primary objective of social networks is to form and sustain relationships with other individuals. • Facebook is an example of a social network.

What are different types of social media? • Microblogging is a status-update service which is a combination of blogging and instant messaging that allows users to create short messages to be posted and shared with an audience online. • Twitter is an example of status-update service that uses microblogging.

  9. What are different types of social media? • A virtual world offers a computer-based, simulated environment which may be populated by many users who interact in mentally and emotionally engaging contentwhich gives rise to an immersive experience. • Second Life is an example of a virtual world.

  11. How has social media evolved? • The first social networking site, SixDegrees, was launched in 1997. In the 2000s, there was a surge in the development of many new social networking sites, some of which remain popular today, such as Facebook, and some of which have faded away, such as Friendster. Some sites have broad appeal, such as Twitter, while others are targeted toward niche communities, such as Gaia Online, which is popular for discussion of anime, gaming, comics, sci-fi, and fantasy. Websites are available that facilitate everything from dating, such as Match, to organizing events, such as Meetup. Professional networking sites, such as LinkedIn have gained tremendous popularity in the business world.

  12. Why is social media use rapidly growing? • There has been a rapid growth in the use of social media. Contributing factors include: • Increase broadband capabilities • Improved software tools • Improvements in computer and mobile technology • Increased affordability of computers and software

  13. Which sites are most popular? • Facebook claims the most users by a significant margin. • YouTube follows Facebook, significantly ahead of other websites. • Instagram popularity falls far short of YouTube, but claims many more users than other websites that follow.
