This project, led by Professor Paul Bartholomew from Birmingham City University, focuses on a comprehensive redesign of curriculum processes through the T-SPARC initiative. From 2008 to 2012, emphasis was placed on understanding the ‘lived experience’ of curriculum design. Findings indicated that the focus on deliverables over processes stifled creativity and innovation. In response, BCU implemented novel multimedia solutions to enhance program design and reporting, fostering a scalable approach that empowers academic teams while maintaining rigorous standards. Successful pilot programs received Senate approval.

Background • 2008 – 2012 project • 2008-2009 – spent in review • We concentrated on the ‘lived experience’ of curriculum design.
Findings of our Review Programme teams reported that this focus on the products of curriculum design rather than the process of curriculum design detracts from rich team discourse and innovative solutions to curriculum design challenges. In summary, our approval practices were perceived to tend to stifle innovation and required a documentary overhead that is seen by staff as being disproportionate to its value.
Novel use of multimedia • In project reporting • In programme design • In other projects across the University too
It’s scalable • Our University Senate has given approval for the new processes (subject to successful pilots) • Software architecture has been designed from the ground-up for University-wide scalability • Need to articulate with SRS has been considered and is development is convergent • We have developed parallel mechanisms for supporting staff in relation to their pedagogic/design needs
