LA’s Policy Service • Objectives • Streamline Policies – fewer pages, less congestion • Include what we need to include • Distinguish between Policies and Administrative Regulations • Focus on District-specific interests/nuances • Provide flexibility as needed in key areas • Meet the Needs of the Board • Meet the Needs of Staff/Admin • Meet the Needs of Students • Save Some Trees! • Result – Two Docs – PM and ARM

Action Steps • Provide Base Policies and Administrative Regs • Include everything required under the law • 2011 - Labor Law Changes (Discipline, Layoff/Recall) • 2017 - Updates to Student Conduct • Tailoring to Meet District Specific Needs • Draw a Clear Line Between Policy and Administrative Regulations • Remove AR from Policy Manual

Role of Legal Counsel • NOT: • To impose standard set of policies • To tell the District/Board what its priorities should be • To craft a “one size fits all” document • IS: • Using experience to craft a policy manual which is manageable, user-friendly, legally-compliant • Help the District/Board integrate its priorities into policies • Work collaboratively • Provide insights, examples • Be available!
