  5. What do we mean by effective state-business relations? • Effective state-business relations are a set of highly institutionalised, responsive and public interactions between the state and the business sector.

  6. The Questions • How have different states fared with the effectiveness of state-business relations? • To what extent can differences in the effectiveness of state business relations explain differences in state level growth and industrial performance? • What explains the evolution of different patterns of state business relations across Indian states, and AP and West Bengal in particular? And what does this imply for industrialisation and economic development? • What are the policy lessons of our research?
