  1. Present, Past, and Future Tense PRESENT: I talk. Talk is the present tense of the verb. It shows I talk now. PAST: I talked Talked is the past tense of the verb. It shows I talked in the past I will talk tomorrow. Will talk is the future tense of the verb. It shows I will talk in the future.

  2. Past Participle This is used with the helping verbs have, has, or had to form three perfect tenses.

  3. Tense Review – Progressive Tenses Progressive Verb Tenses – verb tenses that use the -ing form of a verb with a helping verb Uses am, is, are was, were, will be, have been, has been, or will have been with –ing form of the verb

  4. Tense Review – Progressive Tenses Progressive Past: was running Progressive Present: is running Progressive Future: will be running Progressive Past Perfect: had been running Progressive Present Perfect: have been running or has been running Progressive Future Perfect: will have been running

  5. Present Perfect Tense Let’s look at some examples: I have talked all morning. She has talked to me all morning. BIG CLUE: Present perfect tenses use the helping verb HAVE or HAS with a PAST TENSE VERB. This shows the present perfect tense. The action started in the past but is still going on now or has recently been finished.

  6. Tense Review – Present Perfect Present Perfect: Use the present perfect tense for an action that happened in the past but has continued into the present. To show this tense, you use the helping verb have or has. Example: I have lived in Mississippi for ten years. It is clear to the reader that the speaker still lives in Mississippi. Use have or has with a verb to show that the action continues. have lived past present future

  7. Past Perfect Tense I had talked all morning. BIG CLUE: Past perfect tenses use the helping verb HAD with a PAST TENSE VERB. This shows the past perfect tense. The action started in the past and was finished in the past. It’s over! It’s past!

  8. Tense Review – Past Perfect Past Perfect: Use the past perfect tense for an action that happened in the past, and you need to show which happened before the other. To show this tense, you use the helping verb had. Example: When I saw you yesterday, I had lost my keys. Saw is past tense, but the losing came before the seeing, so you show the first action by using had. Lost keys Saw you past present future

  9. Future Perfect Tense By noon, I will have talked all morning. BIG CLUE: Future perfect tenses use the helping verb WILL HAVE or SHALL HAVE with a PAST TENSE VERB. This shows the future perfect tense. The action will start soon and continue into the future. It will stop at a specific time.

  10. Tense Review – Perfect Tenses Future Perfect: For two future actions, show that on action will happen before the other one by using the helping verbs will have. Example: By the end of the year, you will have studied Julius Caesar. This year will end in the future, but before it does, you will have read the play.
