  2. Making the border • The Government Could not give land to Settlers until they knew how much land they had. • With the help of Metis Guides and British Surveyors they Carefully Marked the land. • Every 3 miles they would build a marker in the land that Showed the Canadian Border.

  3. Trouble in the Whoop up Country • The Cypress Hills rise up from the flat prairie in southern saskatchewan and alberta. • For centuries the cree Nakoda and Siksika came here in winter. • They hunted the game animals. • They cut pine trees to make poles forlodges and tipis. • In the 1860’s the cypress hills was known as the whoop-up country. • Because of the whiskey traders from the united states

Creating a Police Force • The prime minister wanted to show the u.s.a that canada was a province • John.a.macdonald wanted to save the first nations/metis from american crooks • He wanted to to assist the new peoples to join the frontier • Wanted to keep the peace between the first nations and newbies The police force was made to solve the violence in the whoop-up country

  5. A Massacre Spurs on a Prime Minister • In the United States, the army killed thousands of first nations for land. • Prime minister Macdonald tried to avoid the violence in the Canadian West. • Nakoda people were camped near Farwell`s and Solomon`s trading post`s

  6. The Great March West • Police recruits rushed to Manitoba for training. • The next July in 1874, 300 Mounted police headed west in a caravan. • There were ox carts, horses, and wagons. • This so called Great March soon turned into a fiasco. • Local Metis guides had to rescue them. • Part of the force went south. Here they established Fort Macleod.

  7. The role of mounted police • They cleared out whiskey traders. • They put jailed lawbreakers of all types and put them on trial. • They transported the mail. • They put out grass fire and aided the new farmers. • They fought in the 2 metis uprising of 1885.
