  2. Evenifwehavenotplannedit, wemaysoonfindthatwe are sailingafterdark, perhapsbecauseof a failingwind – or a failedengine. Sowehave to beabletocope. But navigation at night is notdifficult. Andin some waysit is easierthanbydaybecauselightscanbeidentifiedat a distance bytheirflashes.

  3. Infactit is saidthatthebest time to reachportafteranoffshorepassage is at dawn. Wehavebeenable to identifythecoastby a light or lightsinthedarkhours, but wehavedaylight to findourwayintoharbour. Thehardest time afterdarkcanbewhenwe are inbusyareaslike Rijeka or Split ports or MaknareStraits. • Withthelightsashore, thelightsofships, andtheflashinglightsofnumerouslighthouses or buoys, itcan look ratherpuzzlingandchallenging. • Yet, ifwe are familiarwiththechart, navigationlightsandcollisionregulations, weshallbeable to findourwayandmakeournavigationsafeandeasy– evenifthehorizonlookslikeChamps-Elysées.

  4. Navigationlights • Lights must beshownfromsunset to sunriseandat all timesduringreducedvisibility. • Coloursandcutoffanglesoflightsare designedto indicatethetypeof a vesselanditstravellingdirection. Starboardlight is green; portlight is red; mastheadandsternlightsare white. Allroundlightshowsanunbrokenlightoveranarcof 360° aroundthehorizon. Flashinglighthasregularflashesof 120 or more per minute (hydrofoilsandair-cushioncraft). Towinglight is a yellowlightwiththe same characteristics as a sternlightandmountedaboveit. Bluelights are carriedby police andcustomsvessels on duty.

  5. Power andsailingvessels • Power andsailingvessels 7 to 20 m LOA must carry a whitemastheadlight, a whitesternlight, and red andgreensidelightsmountedseparatelyor combinedin a single bi-lantern. Vesselsunder7 m LOA withmaximumspeednotexceeding 7 knotsare requiredto carry a single all roundwhitelight but shouldalsocarrysidelightsifpossible.

  6. Towing • Towingvesselsshowtwomastheadlightsforwardin a verticallineor ifthelengthoftowexceeds 200 m – threelightsin a verticalline. Theyalsoshowside lights, sternlightand a yellowlightmountedabovethesternlight. Towedvesselsshowsternandsidelightsonly.

  7. Hovercraftandhydrofoils • Hovercraftandhydrofoilsdisplaynormallights for powerdrivenvesselsandan all roundflashingyellowlightwheninnon-displacementmode.

  8. Vesselsconstrainedbydraught. • Vesselsthat are constrainedbydraughtshowthree all roundred lightswithnormalnavigationlightswhenmakingway.

  9. Vesselsnotundercommand • Vesselsthat are notundercommand, i.e. that are unableto complywiththerules, showtwo all round red lightsand, whenmakingway, sternandsidelights.

  10. Vesselsrestrictedinability to manoeuvre. • Vesselswhich are restrictedinability to manoeuvreshowthree all roundlights – red/white/red in a verticallineandmasthead – sternandsidelightswhenmakingway.

  11. Vesselsaground. • Vesselsthathaverunagroundshowtwo all round red lightsandanchorlights.

  12. Trawlingvessel • A trawlingvesselshowstwo all roundlightsgreenoverwhiteandlights for a powerdrivenvesselunderway.

  13. Pairtrawling • Vesselstrawling as a pairdirectsearchlightsforwardandtoward one another.

  14. Fishingvessels (otherthantrawling) • Fishingvesselsshowtwo all roundlights red overwhiteplus sternandsidelightswhenunderway. • Note: A vessel is deemed to beunderwaywhenshe is not at anchor or moored to theshoreand is makingwaywhensheismovingthroughthewaterusinganymeansofpropulsion, andresponding to her rudder.

  15. Vessels at anchor • Vesselsunder 50 m LOA show one all roundwhitelightwherebestseen. • Vesselsof 50 m LOA or more showtwo all roundwhitelights. • Vessels more than 100 m LOA must alsoilluminatetheirdecks.
