MD300 Introduction to Educational Technology Spring 2007 Thursday 4:30-7:00 Classroom: CNS 301 wderry@stagweb.fairfield.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will study the why of using technology from educational theory, psychology of learning, and information theory points of view. Students will study the wide range of conventional and new technologies of instruction including the use of computers in education, distance education, and multimedia technologies. Effective utilization of instructional technology in schools will focus on the systematic planning of lessons, which will include: the determination of the “relative advantage” of using technology to achieve the desired student outcomes, the appropriate selection of objectives and assessments, the design of integration strategies, the preparation of the learning environment, and the ability to evaluate and revise the lessons. The students will work with a variety of production, presentation and interactive learning technologies.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES, ASSESSMENTS AND COMPETENCIES (Linked to Connecticut’s Common Core of Teaching)The course has two basic components: (1) Through the textbook, lectures, discussions, and other readings, students will learn educational technology theories that will help to apply technology appropriately in an educational setting, and (2) Through numerous demonstrations, hands-on projects with various software and hardware and one site-visit to a school media center/technology lab, students will learn to integrate computers and other technologies into the curriculum to achieve instructional objectives as well as classroom management. The specific course objectives below are based upon the CT Common Core of Teaching, which focuses on the foundation skills and competencies teachers need in the following categories: A.) Students, B.) Content, C.) Pedagogy, D.) Planning, E.) Instruction, F.) Assessing and Adjusting, G.) Professional and Ethical Practice, H.) Reflection and Continuous Learning. Make every effort to be on time and to attend all classes. If you know ahead of time that you are either going to be late or miss a class, then let me know ahead of time as soon as you can.
