The Eastern Woodlands pg. 52 *The Eastern Woodlands stretched east from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean. *Northeast people hunted and gathered food *Farther south they grew corn, beans, squash There was two languages • Algonquian • Iroquoian --Iroquoian lives in Pennsylvania, New York,& Lake Ontario in Canada. --Their houses were called longhouses (50 people) --they fought for hunting area --in 1570 the Iroquois League formed --they acted as a confederation (loose group of government working together to settle conflicts) --Algonquian- were the Powhatan, Ottawa, &Miami --live on the Coastal Plain near the Great Lakes --some lived in longhouses --others in bark-homes called wigwams --fish was important --clothing of deerskin

  3. The Plains --lived on vast grasslands (Interior Plains) --buffalo (American bison) one lived here in N. A. --hunted buffalos --made cups and spoons from the horns --made clothing, homes, shields, &drums from skin --made tools, arrowheads &pipes from the bones **Some Plaines groups were farmers, hunters, & gatherers --they gathered plants, hunted deer, elk, & buffalo --they farmed rich valleys in Missouri River and the Platte River. --lived in earthen houses called lodges **Plain groups live in the western part of the Interior Plains --moved from place to place --follow the herd of buffalo --homes were tepee (cone-shaped tent) --homes easy to move --every man was equal --to be chief had to be a good warrior and leader

The Southwest and the West --This are is a hard place to live --region has summer heat, winter cold & little rain --American Indians groups adapted their way of life to the land Ancient Puebloans --lived in villages called pueblos then by Spanish settlers --Navajo move Southwest before A. D. 1025 --they grow food and cotton --Both Ancient Puebloans and Navajo depended on trade for resources --traveled far to trade pottery and baskets

  5. The West --lived on Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean --depend on nearby natural resources --they formed trade network

The Northwest Coast --stretched along the Pacific Ocean which included Washington and Oregon and British Columbia in Canada --thick forest and river provided lots of fish and animals --they gathered plants and nuts --rivers and coastal waters very important --main food was salmon --whales provided food and fat provide oil for lamps **Northwest Coast provided wood for houses, tools, and boats --hollowed out logs to make boats called dugouts --used dugouts to hunt whales, travel and trade --people made up language to trade --It let them barter or exchange goods

The Arctic and the Sub-Arctic --Arctic is near the North Pole --land is flat & is frozen year-round Aleut --live on the coast of the Aleutian Islands Inuit --live in Alaska and Northern Canada --there are few plants in the Arctic --the people hunt for foxes, seals, & whales --caught seals for food and skin for clothes & tents --Whale oil used for light and to heat homes --bones to make tools South of the Arctic is the sub-Arctic --trees grow in the sub-Arctic Cree hunted for animals and gathered nuts --used trees for wood and wood to make bow and arrows
