  2. Supplies • Pens (only blue or black on major assignments) • Paper • You can use a spiral as long as it is perforated, but I will not accept a paper with fuzzies! • Folder/Binder • Pencils (for scantron tests)

Student Behaviors • Be prompt • Be ready to learn when class begins. • Be prepared • Have materials with you and know due dates. • Be a polite and positive participant • Speak in a normal tone of voice, and listen attentively. • Be productive • Turn in work on time, and always do your best. • Be a problem solver • Correct problems quickly and peacefully before they escalate. • Be neat • Clean up after yourself

  4. Show Respect • Value yourself. Be honest and ethical, and practice strong moral values. • Treat all members of the school community and all visitors with politeness and respect. • Honor the ideas and opinions of others (no bullying). • Offer to help (we will work together a lot). • Be responsible with property and belongings.

  5. AssignmentsI believe in quality and not quantity, so please do your best on each assignment. • Compositions—need to be written in black/blue ink or typed. If you type your final draft of your composition, I will add 5 points to your composition grade if it is not required to be typed. I will not accept a composition without its pre-writes and rough drafts when required. • Vocabulary—practice, quizzes, and tests. (This includes literary vocabulary and Caesar’s English.) • Discussion Questions/Notes—pay close attention and take good notes because you will see them on tests.

  6. Assignments (continued) • Group work—Everyone should work as a team. If someone is not working in a group, he or she will be removed to work alone. Always remain on task, and contribute to the success of the group. • OERs—and other short writing activities will count as both daily, quiz, and/or major grades. • Warm-ups—Everyday you will have a warm-up when you enter the classroom (grammar practice, etc.) You are responsible for keeping up with your warm-up packets, you will only get one.

Assignments (continued) • Tests—are fill in the blank, true/false, multiple choice, matching, short answer, and/or essay, or any combination of the six. • Grammar—Each six weeks we will cover grammar rules in class. At this point you should know most of the grammar rules of the English language, however, do not hesitate to ask if you do not understand the concept we are working on. • Caesar’s English –you will receive and be tested over 10 new roots/stems/words every two weeks. Words/tests are cumulative.

  8. Grading • Grades are based on the accumulation of points. • Points are based on: • Class participation (effort) • Completion of assignments (daily work—11% of grade) • Quizzes (19% of grade) • Major projects, exams, notebook check, and self-reflection (70% of grade) • Grades will be posted online and updated every Monday. • Our Grading Scale • 90-100% = A • 80-89% = B • 70-79% = C • Below 70% = F • Grades are calculated on cumulative percentage and are rounded up whenever possible.

  9. Responsibility for Coursework • Bring notebook paper and appropriate writing tools to class. • Know due dates, and submit all coursework on time. • Know the school policy on late work and retests. • If you forget your work, you may turn it in at the end of the day (3:30p.m., and I will not deduct any late points.)

  10. Make-up Work • Students are responsible for obtaining work they miss due to absences. • Students have the same number of class days missed +1 to complete work and the work will be due the class meeting following. For example, 2 B-days missed – the work will be due on or before the third B-day (2 B-days plus 1 B-day to turn in work). • In certain circumstances where a prolonged illness is involved, an extension of this limit may be arranged between student and teacher. • Exceptions to the normal make-up policy would be where in certain situations where the deadline was communicated-Example: research paper due on or before May 3rd.

  11. Make-up Work • Exams missed are to be taken outside of class time within the make-up period at the convenience of the teacher. • Students are usually informed of exams in advance. Pre-announced exams will be taken when the student returns to school after being absent unless other arrangements are made at the teacher’s discretion. • Students who are truant will not be able to receive credit for make-up work or exams. • A suspension will be considered an extenuating circumstance for attendance purposes and make-up work will be allowed for 70% credit of work completed. Failure to do the work within the designated time may result in a grade of a zero.

  12. Policies • Food and beverages are not allowed in the classroom. • Please be in your seat when the bell rings, as class begins at that time. • Please be on time! If you are late, you need to go quickly to the tardy station, and you might miss important instructions, announcements, and quizzes. • Use correct page headings. Only MLA style headings will be accepted. • Blue or Black ink only.

  14. Discipline Minor offenses • 1st offense is a warning. • 2nd offense, you will be assigned a task to complete that will be taken home and signed by a parent. Parent contact is usually made. • 3rd offense, you will be sent to the office. Major offenses • Immediately sent to office.

  15. Restroom Pass • Make sure you sign in and out and take the pass when going to the restroom. • I do not mind if you use the restroom during class, but do not abuse this privilege or it will be taken away. • Our time is limited, extended or frequent visits to the restroom will result in a loss of privileges.

  16. My Pledge to Students I believe respect is mutual. You will have my respect as long as you give me yours, and I will trust you unless you give me reason to do otherwise. • I will respect you and work with you to solve problems. • I will offer extra help and alternative assessments should you require them. • “There are always two choices.   17. Late Work • Late work will be an 80 for one day late, 60 for two days late and a 0 after that. • Assignments given a set due date with more than one week notice will NOT be accepted late.

  18. Cell Phones • Upon entering the classroom, turn off your electronic device and place it on the right side of your desk. • Electronic devices are to be used as instructed by the teacher for instructional purposes only. • Failure to comply with the Electronic Device Expectations will result in your device being confiscated and receiving disciplinary consequences.
