ADOLESCENCE • derived from the word “Adolescere” which means “to grow to maturity” • Span of life ranging from 12 to 19 years • Biologically, Adolescence is the stage when puberty dawns • Also known as teenage period Jersild: “Adolescence is that span of years during which boys and girls move from childhood to adulthood, mentally, emotionally, socially and physically.”

  2. Stanley Hall : “Adolescence is a period of great stress, strain, storm and strife” Bigge and Hunt : “ The one word which best characterizes adolescence is ‘change’. The change is physiological, sociological and psychological”

  3. Physical Development • Increase in height and weight • Rapid Development of bones, muscles and organs • Changes in bodily proportion • Change in voice • Hair growth • Night emissions and menstruation • Increase in blood pressure and pulse rate • Digestive system

  4. Intellectual Development • Intelligence reaches its climax • Increase in span of attention • Power of concentration is increased • Development of memory and imagination • Hero worship • Interests in recreational activities such as games and sports • Personal, vocational, and religious interests • Interest in sexual matters

Emotional Development • Period of heightened emotionality • Age of emotional upheavals that is period of stress and strain • Emotions not under control • Increased compassion • Emotion of love: Autoeroticism(self-love) • Attachment towards opposite sex • Emotion of anger, worry and jealousy • Capacity of sharing emotions • Restlessness and changing moods

Social Development • Social Consciosness: Want to be praised by parents, teachers and friends • Form the groups and discuss problems freely • Group loyalty • Development of Coordination/ Leadership • Development of Social Insight • Want to attract members of opposite gender • Social service in public gatherings, fairs and festivals • Does not mind personal inconvenience while helping others
