  2. Page 69Copy this sentence from Crash on that page. What do you notice? A single hawk, its wingtips spread like black fingers, kited over the school, and suddenly I saw something: a gift.

  3. What does a colon do? A colon is like a drum roll that announces what follows. In front of the colon should be a complete sentence. After the colon, you should say something interesting or surprising or list something.

  4. You are about to view a photograph that is connected to the events of chapter 1. With as much detail as possible, explain what happened in chapter 1 that is connected to the photograph. Write a thorough paragraph with complete sentences. I will only give three possible grades—0, 50, 100. Make sure you prove to me that you read and understood the text! If you did not read and therefore cannot answer the question, just write, “I did not complete my reading homework for this week.”

  5. Turn and Talk How is the photograph connected to the events of chapter 1? Hint: pages 14-22

  6. What do we know about Little Man that helps us understand his reaction to the used reader?

  7. What does Mama’s reaction to Little Man’s behavior and the readers reveal to you about her character? Can you make any predictions based on this reaction?

  8. Good readers visualize as they read. Visualizing helps ensure that you are comprehending. As you read chapter one of “Freedom Riders,” sketch what you are visualizing in the margin. These do not need to be elaborate pictures—just quick sketches. You should have two to four sketches per page. As you read, use the visualization technique to help you comprehend the text.

  9. Use the graphic organizer on page 110 to help you identify the central idea and details. Write an objective summary of the chapter.

  10. Read Chapter 2. Be prepared to respond to a comprehension check when you return to class on MONDAY.
