  1. Pushing On Air Part 4

  2. Daily Objective • Air is matter and takes up space. • Air can be compressed. • The pressure from compressed air can move things.

  3. Vocabulary • Syringe - A cylinder and piston system used to draw up, measure and transfer liquids • Plunger - A device used to unclog drains and pipes • Barrel - A large round container with a flat top and bottom of equal sizes • Tubing - A hollow cylinder that acts as a passage for a fluid • Compress - To squeeze air into a smaller space • Pressure - A force that acts on compressed air • System - A set of objects that are related in some way and can be isolated for study; a group of things ore parts

  4. Introduction Today we will use a new tool to find out more about air. Each student will get a syringe and piece of tubing.

  5. Observations and DiscussionsIndividual Exploration Now that you’ve had time to explore let me see if you can... • Make the tube fit on the tip of the syringe. • Pull the plunger out of the barrel. • Push air out of the tube with the plunger.

  6. Observation and DiscussionPartner Exploration With your partner see what happens if you crimp the tubing and hold it tightly. Then try to push the plunger down. Try to plunger down or pull the plunger out.

  7. Observation and DiscussionTwo Syringes Now see what happens if connect two syringes together. • Push and pull one plunger. • Push both plungers at the same time. • Pull both plungers to the end of the barrel. Then push one plunger in.

  8. DiscussionTwo Syringe System Watch as I push one plunger all the way in the other is all the way out. What is happening to the air inside the syringe? The plunger pushes the air into the other plunger.

  9. DiscussionAir Wrestling Watch as I push one plunger all the way down and hold it firmly. Then I push on the other plunger. • Is there more air in the system now with the air compressed? Watch as I release one plunger. • Is there more air now with the pressure released so one plunger returns to its starting position? The amount of air in the system does not change. No air can get in or out of the system. What happens is the air gets pushed into a smaller space. When all of the air is pushed into one of the syringes we say it is compressed. Compressed air pushes back with pressure. It is the sir pressure that can push the plunger back out when you release.

  10. DiscussionPop-Off Watch as I pull both plungers out of the barrels and replace them only far enough to get the rubber tips into the barrels. What will happen if I increase the pressure in the system by pushing one of the plungers in? Plunging one syringe compresses the air in the system, creating pressure, which forces the other plunger out of its barrel.

  11. Vocabulary Review • Syringe - A cylinder and piston system used to draw up, measure and transfer liquids • Plunger - A device used to unclog drains and pipes • Barrel - A large round container with a flat top and bottom of equal sizes • Tubing - A hollow cylinder that acts as a passage for a fluid • Compress - To squeeze air into a smaller space • Pressure - A force that acts on compressed air • System - A set of objects that are related in some way and can be isolated for study; a group of things ore parts

  12. What We Learned • You can not __________ the plunger in all the way when air is trapped inside. • Plunging one syringe _______________ the air creating __________ and pushing the other one out. push compresses pressure
