Latin IV / AP Open House Mrs. HwangBo January 24th, 2013
Academic Topics • Attendance is important, esp. on the block system! • Every student should come prepared to participate in class every day (book, notebook / paper, writing utensil). • Active participation in classroom instruction is the best way to learn and retain the curriculum.
Academic Topics • Authors: Caesar, Vergil. • Latin Homework is a reality at this level: 5-15 lines at home each night (avg. 6-8 right now). • Daily Translation (25-35 lines per diem, includes home work lines). • Parallel English readings of each Latin text.
Grading System • Grades are still divided into Georgia Performance Standards categories as listed in the syllabus. • Assessment Types: • Practice: will appear in Pinnacle, doesn’t count. • “For Real”: will appear in Pinnacle, does count… or, as the kids know, “ ’nuff said.”
Grading System, Ct’d. • Assessment Formats: • Latin Assessments – mimic AP style • Multiple choice about a passage, addresses content and grammar. • Short / Long Essay – students write a short response to an English prompt analyzing the content of the Latin passage, use Latin in textual reference for support. • English Assessments – accountability • Open book, timed reading comprehension quizzes over the parallel English reading.
Misc. Resources • Edmodo – great new resource via CCSD. “Like Facebook for school”. Mains source of communication & access to materials. • Remind 101 – group texting service used for homework & club reminders. • Quizlet: www.quizlet.com - online flash cards for review, search for Harrison HS Latin group.
Latin Club • 3rd Tuesday of each month, 3:30-4:15, in rooms 311 & 314 • Social opportunity to continue their interest in the classical languages and cultures. • Major Events: Fall Forum (Sept. 29th), Ides of March Macaroni Grill dinner (Feb. 19th), GJCL State Convention (Apr. 19 – 21, 2013).
