  1. Needlesmiths and Pillows

  2. To make your pillow you will need the following: • 1 Zip-Loc baggie • 1 index card w/your name & class written on both sides • 1 needle/1yd. of thread • 1 Basting/Backstitch paper • 12”x12” of fabric

  3. Measure your fabric square. Is it 12”x 12”? Iron your cut piece of fabric using the cotton setting.

  4. Fold your fabric, right sides together, wrong side out!

  5. Match selvage ends and cut edges.

  6. Use straight pins to join the 2 pieces together. Place the pins perpendicular to the sides.

  7. Use a seam gauge and a chalk pencil to measure a ½” seam on all open sides of your fabric. Do this with a partner!

  8. Sew all the open sides of your fabric using a basting stitch. Make them evenlyspaced and smooth! Your stitches should be about the same size as your practice stitches!

  9. After basting, remove all straight pins and put in pin cushion!

  10. Time for a grade! Take yourpillow and yourbaggie to Mrs. H. to have it graded.

  12. Re-stitch your seams using backstitches. They should be no longer than ¼”. Stop sewing when you reach the lasthalf of the lastside of your pillow!

  13. Make a double knot at the end of each seam. If you can’t make a double knot, re-thread your needle and…

  14. Sew over your last 2 stitches to reinforce your seam.

  15. Remove all of your basting stitches. Be careful not to remove your backstitches!!

  16. Trim the seams of your pillow in layers. Top seam 1/4” wide. Bottom seam 3/8” wide.

  17. Trim all sewn corners diagonally. Be sure not to cut too close to the stitches.

  18. Press pillow with iron.

  19. Turn the pillow right side out and fill with stuffing. Use the eraser end of your pencil to push stuffing into the corners.

  20. Pin your pillow shut by folding in the seams on your open area. Make sure the seams match. Place pins parallel to the sides.

  21. Use slip stitches to close your pillow. Knot twice at the end of the seam.

  22. Return your pillow, baggie, index card and needle to the teacher for a grade. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FINI
