  1. Welcome to Literature Circles Honors Social Studies Class ! Please pick up a textbook Please have (2) post it notes Be ready to listen and explore this new strategy for us this year !

Literacy/Literature Circles • What Are Literature Circles? • In literature circles, small groups of students gather together to discuss a piece of literature in depth. • The discussion is guided by students' response to what they have read. • You may hear talk about events and characters in the book, the author's craft, or personal experiences related to the story. • Literature circles provide a way for students to engage in critical thinking and reflection as they read, discuss, and respond to books. • Collaboration is at the heart of this approach.

  3. Let’s take a look at a classroom that is using Literary Circles. • Now, keep in mind that the video clip shows an ELA classroom, we are Social Studies, but the roles that are used in the Lit Circle we will use as well. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVK9ZV-AinA

  4. Who will be in your Lit Circle this year ? • Color groups this year will be….. • Please write down on the cover of your packet the names of the classmates who are in your group. • Yes, write down the number that is with their names. • 1 • 2 • 3 • 4 • 5 • 6 ( only one group has this)

  5. What are the roles in a lit circle ? • 1. Connector • 2. Summarizer • 3. Discussion Director • 4. Literary Vocabulary • 5. Illustrator • 6. 1 group also have a “ Checker” • Please write down the role that you have next to your name. • Today I will assign you a role to learn about. In your “role” group you will meet with others who have the same role. • You will prepare a summary of your role together to share with your lit circle group. • You will need your post it notes to record the summary on.

  6. What will happen first ?? • In your “role” group you will meet with others who have the same role. • You will prepare a summary of your role together to share with your lit circle group. • You will need your post it notes to record the summary on.

  7. Can I have all of the jobs meet together. • Please review what each of you will be doing as your job. • Read over the card you have, read over your job in the lit circle packet as well. • How will you tell the other members of your color lit circle group what your job is? • Place your summary of your job on your post it note.

  8. Move with all of your belongings to your lit circle group • Red Orange Yellow • Green Blue Purple

Now move to your lit circle groups • Can I have you move to your lit circle group. • Please bring with you your textbook and your informational role card and your mind how you will tell your group what your job is. • Once in your groups, being rotating around for everyone to share what their role is and what they are to do when they have that role. • Report out to whole group when done.

  10. Collection of the role cards and what your task is today ! • Today you will begin to practice the role you learned about today. Yes, in the future we will rotate these roles. • Each group is to read Chapter 20 section 1 and section 2 • With the Chapter sections as your piece of “ literature” you will complete your packet. • Everyone has a role to play and work to do. • If you need markers or supplies, please help yourself to the materials on the front table.

  11. Task- Using Chapter 20 sec 1 +2 as your “ literature” • Everyone will share with the lit group your information to record into the packet. You are only turning in (1) packet. You may break apart the packet and give each person their page to complete. • Are there any questions ? You have the rest of the block to work on this. • I will collect (1) packet from each group to serve as your classwork grade today and to see how well you understood your roles.
