  3. Riparian Buffers! • WHAT? Strips of vegetation (trees/plants) next to streams and rivers

  4. Why?? • 1. Limits flow of pollution into water

  5. 2. Slows floodwater

  6. 3. Provides shade; cools the water

  7. 4. Limits mud and sediment from flowing into water preventing erosion.

  8. 5. Provides habitat for animals

  12. Point Source Pollution • An identifiable source of pollution that directly enters the water • Ex. Pollution being dumped into a river via a pipe from a factory • Ex. Directly dumping trash into a river

  13. Non Point Source Pollution • Pollution that INDIRECTLY enters our water through run off • Spread out over large areas • Example: Fertilizers from lawn washed into a river with the rain
