Etikoppaka Toys That Bring More Value to The Heritage of Andhra Pradesh
A few Decades ago, who knew a small village of Andra Pradesh, Etikoppaka will earn huge pride for inventing a unique art Etikoppaka Toys? These traditional toys are made up of Ankudi Karra trees’ wood that later gets painted with natural dyes derived from lacquer, seeds, and leaves. This enchanting art was recognized several years before the independence by the local artisans of Etikoppaka village. The toys are available in various
different forms but, the most common and famous ones are, the canon, Lord Ganesha and Bullock. The art of making Etikoppaka toys is also known as turned wood Lacquer craft in many states. The specialty of these beautiful toys lies in their vibrant colors because while painting these items, lac, a colorless resinous secretion of numerous insects along with the vegetables’ or leaves’ dyes, are used. These dyes do not contain heavy metal or toxic content within them, hence, they are very light to use. As Etikoppaka toys are painted and decorated with fresh and natural dyes, they have a lasting shine that makes them unique. Apart from having a magnetic shine, the Etikoppaka toys have unique shapes and designs. They are very popular and are exported across the world. This astonishing wooden and painting art is more than 400 years old which has been traditionally handed over to the artisans by their ancestors through generations. Earlier the designers were restricted to design and create traditional toys like toy carts.
But, things have changed now. The Etikoppaka artisans have taken the art to the next level of invention. They have come up with a wider and different range of Etikoppaka toys such as god and goddess sculptures, wooden ornaments and many other attractive accessories or items. The Geographical Indication Registry (GIR) has stated that the Etikoppaka toys from Andhra Pradesh will soon join the elite club of Geographical Indication (GI) tagged things such as shadow puppets, Kondapalli toys, Tirupati Laddu,
Srikalahasthi Kalamkari, Jamdani sarees. Getting the GIR tag would be a great achievement for Etikoppaka toy makers.
