  1. P.A.C.E.S. Parent and Child(ren) Educational Services

Context of the Program • PACES is a family literacy supplemental program offered through Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD) Northwest Campus through the Learning Communities for Academic Readiness (LCAR) program for low-income students. • The purpose of the program is to continue the ongoing support of the Achieving the Dream (AtD) Initiative at the college through five (5) levels/paces. • PACE 1: Introductory • PACE 2: Developmental • PACE 3: Inter-relational • PACE 4: Interactive • PACE 5: Transitional

  3. Program Objectives • PACE 1: Introductory- During this phase the participants will attend a mandatory orientation session. • PACE 2: Developmental- Participants will partake of tutoring assistance for currently enrolled courses. • PACE 3: Inter-relational- Parents are assigned to learning communities to receive academic and social support. • PACE 4: Interactive- During this phase both parent and child(ren) will participate in service learning exercises. • PACE 5: Transitional- This final phase is designated for the parent as they are now ready to begin their transition from school to work and the child(ren) to the next grade level.

  4. Program Audience • Participants of the PACES pilot program will consist of: • 15 low-income adult single parents with a child or children in grades 6-8 attending Emerson Middle School. According to the National Center for Family Literacy Family (2008), literacy programs help parents develop the skills and knowledge they need to be self-sufficient.

  5. Program Support • Program support will be provided through The Skillman Foundation and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as part of its Developmental Education Initiative. • The Skillman Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will be used to obtain a grant for program funding. • A portion of the grant will be used to pay the program director, program facilitators, administrative assistant, and college facililties and media/marketing division.

  6. Instructional Plans & Formats • The curriculum will consist of research-based classroom activities which promote learning in contexts which are relevant to the lives of participants. • Program includes: • college course face-to-face (Intro to Math and English) • homework assistance • individual and family activities • service-learning opportunities • effective intra-personal communication • Participants are expected to be actively engaged in the decision-making process with regard to their educational success.

  7. Evaluation Plans • At the end of the school term in June 2014 or when the MEAP reading scores are released throughout the state • A complete report on the program will be submitted to both the Skillman Foundation and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. • The report will compare the child(ren) test scores for the current year with those from the previous year. Comparative ranking with other schools in the state will be analyzed. • Results of satisfaction surveys from both the parent and facilitators/staff will also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and information gained will be included in the final report.

  8. Scheduling & Staff Needs • Support staff will consist of: • 1 Program Director (full-time) • 3 Program Facilitators (part-time) • 1 Administrative Assistant (full-time) • College departmental support: • Enrollment Services • Academic Advising • Financial Aid • Facilities Management • Budget and Finance • Media and Graphic Design • Institutional Research

Budget, Marketing & Facilities • The Skillman Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will be used to obtain a grant for program funding. • Beginning mid August 2013 the program office personnel and college media department will send out leaflets, flyers, email, and social media announcements, explaining the program and requirements. • For the start of the 2013-2014 Academic School Year the program will meet at WCCCD each Monday and Wednesday evening 6-8PM.

  10. Events Timeline • In July 2013, the program director will train staff members. • Beginning late August 2013 the program office personnel and college media department will send out leaflets, flyers, email, and social network blasts explaining the program and requirements. • For the start of the 2013-2014 Academic School Year the program will meet at WCCCD each Monday and Wednesday evening.. • During the first week of school, September 9-13, 2013, program staff will send a report on the number of students enrolled in the PACES project to the Skillman Foundation and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
