Linga Murty, North Carolina State University, DMR 0412583 Ti3Al2.5V tubing was annealed at 700C for 4 hours resulting in 7mm grain size – OIM image along with orientation map are shown on the right. Biaxial creep tests on closed-end internal pressurization at around 5x10-4E revealed viscous creep behavior with strain-rate proportional to the stress with activation energy close to that for grain-boundary diffusion but correlations with Coble creep model revealed distinct deviations (see Figure). In addition, TEM following creep revealed distinct slip bands intersecting grain boundaries. Predictions based on Spingarn-Nix slip band model with stress-independent slip band width are in close agreement with the experimental results.

Linga Murty, North Carolina State University, DMR 0412583 • Broader Impact: • Titanium alloys find applications in the aerospace, chemical, and biomedical industries. The research will significantly augment our understanding of structure-property correlations in these alloys, and open up new opportunities for their future applications. • As a part of ‘Young Investigators Summer Programs’ since 2006, groups of high school students were involved in a two-week long research project assisted by the graduate students supported by this grant. After completion of their project, they presented their research results. This is an ideal way to recruit bright students to science and technology. • Many undergraduate students have been supported through the related REU supplements. Many of them have shown interest in pursuing graduate studies. Full-time graduate students and a postdoctoral researcher have contributed towards achieving the project objectives. • Journal papers and conference presentations have been made through which results are disseminated in the widest possible way. This group (during summer 2010) investigated mechanical anisotropy of textured Zircaloy sheet Photo on left shows the group of 3 high school students along with a graduate student (Ms. Vanna Gaffney) , the PI and an REU (Mr. Mital Zalvadia).
