  3. What might children encounter on the Internet? • Over 10,000 “Hate Sights” • World Church of the Creator • Stormfront.org • Links to David Duke’s hate site • Links to MLK - then gives you incorrect, racist information.

  4. What might children encounter on the Internet? • Blue Panic - Webicide • ANA & MIA - Support sites to encourage anorexia and bulimia. • Gambling online - age restrictions apply - but kids can simply click “yes” when asked are you 18 or older.

  5. 70% of children have seen cyber porn • For both boys and girls it distorts the perception of women. • 270,000 porn sites with some making their own movies.

  6. School Related • Popular Websites for students you may not have known about: • www.ratemyteacher.com • www.myspace.com • www.facebook.com (need HS/College e-mail) • www.wikipedia.com • http://www.urbandictionary.com/

  7. Myspace allows children to create online profiles. It requires them to be a certain age - easy to fool. Kids don’t understand what they should not provide. Similar to Myspace - created by a college student at an Ivy League school. Recently gone public. Intended to be private chats and bio’s. Myspace and Facebook

  8. Why are our children afraid to tell us when they have found something they shouldn’t? • One simple answer, not that they are not trustworthy, they simply do not want parents to take away their privileges.

  9. Cyber-bullying - a growing concern. • Veil of Silence - hard to catch • FreeVote.com - who is the ugliest • Myspace.com - putting pictures of “another student” on a site to make fun of. David Knight dropped out during his Junior year because of this.

  10. How can we stop cyber-bullying? • Contact your ISP • Contact the local schools • Get in touch with law enforcement and FBI • Take legal action • Parents must be involved

  12. Internet Luring - The Grooming Process • Shared interests • Trust • Secrecy • Breaking down barriers • Threats • Face to Face meetings

  13. A few of many examples of what can happen. • Kacie Woody met “Dave” in a Christian chat room - she was abducted and murdered. • Christina Long Story - Unlike Kacie - she was a willing participant. Certainly does not make what happened legal.

  14. How do we help our children be safe? • Understand net lingo. • Inform them never to give out ASL or any other identifying information. • Many of the deviants who prey on children are very smart. • Get involved with what your children are doing online - be a pain.

How else can we help? • Keep the computer in a central location - not a child’s room. • Ask your child early what the acronyms they use mean. • If your child gets into trouble or in a location undesirable, don’t lose your cool. Their biggest fear is that the computer time will be taken away. • Explain to your child that you will be checking their computer use often. • Google their name and see what comes up. It is a fine line between being nosey and protecting your children and students!

  17. In Closing Take time to teach your children how to have a safe experience online. The computer can be a great tool as well as great fun if used properly.
