  4. EARLY CHILDHOOD Facts • Betsy became a seamstress’ apprentice at age 12 and later became an expert seamstress. • Betsy also had 7 SIBLINGS!

  5. Education • Betsy Ross attended Friends school in Pennsylvania.

  6. Adult Life During her three marriages she produced seven John Ross her first husband was not a Quaker. Her parents disapproved of this. This forced them to elope. When her husband was killed in a gunpowder accident, she inherited his business. She became a seamstress and flag maker. At the age of 84, Betsy Ross related the American flag story to her 11 year old grandson, John Canby. George Washington approached her to make the first flag because of her skills and her relationship to George Ross, her first husband's uncle and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence

Important events George Washington approached Betsy to make the first flag because of her skills and her relationship to George Ross, her first husband's uncle and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The story that was told stated that General Washington and his committee came into Ross' house and asked her to make a flag similar to the one that they had sketched. Ross, also, became the official flag maker of the Pennsylvania Navy. The Stars and Stripes design was adopted by Congress in 1777.

  8. Death • Betsy Ross is now deceased. She died on January 30, 1836.

  9. Remembered by…… • Betsy was remembered because she was believed to have made the first flag under recommendation of George Washington.
