Chapter 1: Tools of Geometry

This chapter explores essential tools of geometry, focusing on isometric, orthographic, and foundation drawings, along with the concept of nets. Isometric drawings help represent 3D objects from a corner view using dot paper, while orthographic drawings illustrate top, front, and side views like a blueprint. Foundation drawings indicate the base and height of structures, vital for constructing skyscrapers. Additionally, it covers nets, which are 2D patterns folded into 3D shapes. Examples and homework problems are provided for practical learning.

  1. Chapter 1: Tools of Geometry 1-2 Drawings, Nets, & Other Models

  2. Isometric Drawing • “isos” = equal • “metron” = measure • All 3-D measurements are scaled equally • Use isometric dot paper to show three sides of a figure from a corner view

  3. Example 1 • Make an isometric drawing of the cube structure on page 10 of your book.

  4. Orthographic Drawing • Shows a top view, a front view, and a right-side view • Like a blueprint of a building

  5. Example 2 • Make an orthographic drawing of the figure on page 11 of your book.

  6. Foundation Drawing • Shows the base of a structure and the height of each part • Used for skyscrapers!

  7. Example 3 • Make a foundation drawing for the isometric drawing on page 11 of your book.

  8. Nets • Two-dimensional pattern that you can fold to form a three-dimensional figure • Shows all of the surfaces of a figure in one view

  9. Example 4 • What figure will this net make?

  10. Example 5 • Draw a net for the graham cracker box.

  11. Homework • P. 13-15 • 1-16 all (with work) • 23-26 • 28-30
