  3. The Eye • Adult eye is about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter • The accessory structures of the eye include the eyelids, conjunctiva, lacrimal apparatus, and extrinsic eye muscles

  4. Eyelids • Protect the eyeballs • Meet at the medial and lateral commissure • On the ends of the eyelids, lie eyelashes protecting the borders of the palpebral fissure • Ciliary and Tarsal glands on the edge of eyelashes lubricates the eye, keeping it from going dry

  5. Conjunctiva • A delicate membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the outer surface of the eyeball • Fuses with the corneal epithelium • Helps in lubrication of eye by secreting mucus

  6. Lacrimal Apparatus • Consists of lacrimal gland- releases a dilute salt solution (tears) through small ducts • Lacrimal secretions contain antibodies and lysozymes, destroying bacteria • Cleans and protects eye surface

  7. Extrinsic Eye Muscles • Six different muscles attached to outer surface of each eye • Lateral rectus, Medial rectus, Superior rectus, Inferior rectus, Inferior oblique, Superior oblique • Gives eye ability to move and follow moving objects
