    1. Participles and Participial Phrases Review Participles are forms of verbs that act like adjectives. Many adjectives are actually verbals known as participles. Indicate whether each underlined word acts as an adjective or a verb. 1. We were hiking along a winding trail. We spotted another hiking party coming toward us. We had raised our hands to wave when we saw the raised hand of the leader waving to us. We asked if they had experienced any camping difficulties. They said experienced hikers like us wouldnt have problems.

Perfect tense will include having or having been before a past participle. Carlsbad Caverns, established as a national park in 1930, is in New Mexico. Nestled in the Guadalupe Mountains, the caverns are open year-round. Water, flowing through limestone, carved out the caverns. First explored scientifically in 1924, the caverns are still not fully mapped. With only 28 miles of known corridors, the area has not been fully explored. The caverns, containing many named chambers, descend to a depth of 1,597 feet below the surface. 7. The Big Room, having enormous dimensions, is the largest underground chamber in North America.
