  2. Sixth Sunday of Resurrection Season The Appearance of Jesus to the Apostles in the Upper Room A Reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans (Romans 10:1-13) Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God on their behalf is for salvation. I testify with regard to them that they have zeal for God, but it is not discerning. For, in their unawareness of the righteousness that comes from God and their attempt to establish their own (righteousness), they did not submit to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for the justification of everyone who has faith. Moses writes about the righteousness that comes from (the) law, "The one who does these things will live by them." But the righteousness that comes from faith says, "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will go up into heaven?' (that is, to bring Christ down) or 'Who will go down into the abyss?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead)." But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith that we preach), for, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. For the scripture says, "No one who believes in him will be put to shame." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all, enriching all who call upon him. For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.“ The Word of the Lord. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke (Luke 24:36-48) While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you." But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have." And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them. He said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled." Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. And he said to them, "Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. This is The Truth, Peace be with you.

  3. Sixth Sunday of Resurrection Season The Appearance of Jesus to the Apostles in the Upper Room • Intention Prayers • Celebrant: With the universal Church, and the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI (Sixteenth), Mar Nasrallah Peter our Patriarch of Antioch, Mar Joseph our Bishop and all the bishops and priests, we offer prayers to you Father. May you keep us witnesses to your Son’s Resurrection. We pray to the Lord. • With the community present here in this Church, and all the faithful, we beseech you Father to grant us the grace to trust our faith so we get forgiveness for our sins and inherit the eternal life, through the intercession of our Virgin Mother Mary. We pray to the Lord. • For all the missionaries in the world, the religious and lay people who committed their lives to proclaim your Son’s word. Give them, Lord, the perseverance to continue their mission following the guidance of the Virgin Mother, Our Lady of missionaries. We pray to the Lord. • We pray with the Holy Father and the Church of the world, for the seminarians who are getting ready to walk the path of priesthood. May they receive a spiritual and educational guidance to proclaim your Gospel in their countries and the world. We pray to the Lord. • We pray for all the faithfully departed who have gone before us, especially (…). Have mercy on them and allow them in your kingdom. Accept our offerings on their behalf and give them eternal rest in your kingdom. Forgive their sins and ours. We pray to the Lord. The Rosary is a way ofcontemplating the face of Christseeing him - we may say -with the eyes of Mary. For this reason, it is a prayer that drawing upon the core of the Gospel is in full accord with the inspiration of the Second Vatican Council and very much in keeping with the direction I gave in the Apostolic Letter Novo Millennio ineunte: the Church has to launch out "into the deep" in the new millennium beginning with the contemplation of the face of Christ. Ascension The Christian doctrine of the Ascension holds that Jesus' body ascended to heaven in the presence of his apostles following his resurrection, and that in heaven he sits at the Father's right hand. Jesus died c. 30. In the Epistle to the Romans (c. 56-57), Paul describes Christ as in heaven and in the abyss, the earliest Christian reference to Jesus in heaven. The most influential account of the Ascension, and according to the two-source hypothesis the earliest, is in the Acts of the Apostles1:1-11, where Jesus is taken up bodily into heaven forty days after his resurrection, as witnessed by his apostles, after giving the Great Commission with a prophecy to return. In the Gospel of Luke, the Ascension takes place on Easter Sunday evening. The Gospel of John (c. 90-100) refers to Jesus returning to the Father. In 1 Peter (c. 90-110,Jesus has ascended to heaven and is at God's right side. Ephesians (c. 90-100) refers to Jesus ascending higher than all the heavens. First Timothy (c. 90-140) describes Jesus as taken up in glory. The traditional ending of Mark (see Mark 16) includes a summary of Luke's resurrection material and describes Jesus as being taken up into heaven and sitting at God's right hand. The imagery of Christ's Ascension is related to the broader theme of his exaltation and heavenly welcome, derived from Hebrew scripture. The image of Jesus rising bodily into the heavens reflects the ancient view that heaven was above the earth.
