Diesel Powered Commercial Motor Vehicles“The Facts” • Most are idled on average 9 hours per day  • Most use up to 1.5 gallons per hour of fuel to idle  • Idling is the most damaging mode to the diesel engine of the truck  • Commercial Motor Vehicles are still the most economical way to ship items 

  4. Diesel Trucks On average, a fleet of 150 trucks can create: VOC’s 6.375 tons/yr CO 47.685 tons/yr Nox 28.6875 tons/yr CO2 52,555 tons/yr Sox 1081 tons/yr PM10 1161 tons/yr

  5. Can be significant contributors to pollution. Especially when idling Can generate less pollution with Auxiliary power units (APU’s) APU’s are devices that serve to keep the Diesel trucks off the idle mode. More and more states are passing non-idle laws Diesel Trucks

  7. APU’s • Wired into the truck cab allow the driver to regulate the temperature. • Diesel units use on average less than 0.1 gallons per hour

  8. Truck with APU Trucks can reduce the Volatile Organic Compounds, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides and Carbon Dioxide produced when using these units, by significant amounts.

  12. Potential help on cost • Each unit can cost upwards of $3,600 installed • Currently, there is a Bill on the floor of the US Rep. Called “Idling Reduction Tax Credit Act of 2004”, which would give owners a break of $3,500.00.

  13. Conclusion • Together with other programs and ideas, the trucking industry can lose the stigma of being a “necessary pollution evil”. • EPA has developed the ‘Smart-Way Program’ to help facilities with fleets improve on technologies.
