4. After the French Revolution Napoleon seized power in France and set out to conquer the world. He wanted Louisiana as his base in the North America. In 1800 he forced Spain to sign the Treaty of San Ildefonso. This treaty was to be kept secret. Fact # 1

5. In 1802 Spain took away the American’s “Right of Deposit” and the farmers demanded action. Following the secret treaty Spain finally gave Louisiana back to France or risk invasion of Spain by Napoleon. Fact # 2 Fact # 2

6. Fact # 3 Napoleon sent troops to regain Saint- Dominque which they lost in 1801 to a slave rebillion led by Toussaint L’Overture. He changed the island’s name back to it’s original name of Haiti. Fact # 3

7. Fact # 4 In 1802 Napoleon sent 20,000 troops to reclaim the island. He expected to take Louisiana and gain control of the Mississippi Valley. However, an attack of yellow fever changed Napoleon’s future and the history of Louisiana forever. Most of the French soldiers died in Haiti of yellow fever. Fact # 4

8. Fact # 5 Napoleon could not risk sending more troops. He knew the Americans wanted New Orleans. Selling Louisiana seemed to make a good choice since he needed money to fight England. Spain protested the sale of the colony. Fact # 5

9. Fact # 6 At the time Napoleon decided to sell Louisiana, he was in his bathtub, when Napoleon’s brother approached him in his luxurious chamber. After a heated debate, he decided to get rid of the colony by selling it to the United States. Fact # 6

10. April 30, 1803, Robert Livingston and James Monroe worked out a deal with Napoleon for the colonies sale at $15 million - about 4 cents an acre. The money was borrowed by the U.S. from England, then paid to France so France could then fight England. Fact # 7 Fact # 7

11. Fact # 8 The French first accepted the transfer of Louisiana from the Spain in New Orleans on November 30, 1803. On Dec. 20th, just twenty days later, the colony was transferred from France to the United States. Fact # 8

12. Fact # 9 The Louisiana Purchase more than doubled the size of the United States. The U.S. government created two territories in March 1804 – The Territory of Orleans south of the 33rd and the Territory of Louisiana north of the 33rd. Fact # 9

13. James Wilkinson became governor of the Territory of Louisiana and it’s capitol of St. Louis. William C.C. Claiborne became governor of the Territory of Orleans with its capitol of New Orleans. Fact # 10 Fact # 10
