  4. Western Territory—cont. • Area west of Miss. River known as ________ _________ (belonged to Spain). • Pioneers settled along rivers that fed Miss. River in order to help ship crops. • Spanish allowed Americans to sail lower Miss. & trade in New Orleans (Pinckney’s Treaty). • 1802—Spain changed mind and refused American goods to move past New Orleans. • 1802—Jefferson said Spain made secret agreement w/France that gave them the Louisiana Territory.

The French Threat • French leader ____________ had major plans for an empire in Europe and America. • Napolean wanted Santo Domingo for naval base. • Events in Santo Domingo ended his dream of a Western Empire. • Enslaved Africans, led by ________________ , set up new govt. and said colony was an independent republic. • 1802—French captured Toussaint, but were driven from the island and country regained original name back—Haiti.

The Nation Expands • French had little finances to fund Napolean’s war against British, so he sold Louisiana Territory to Jefferson: • Paid ____ million. • Would provide cheap, abundant land for farmers. • Size of U.S. __________. • Jefferson wanted to know more about land: • Sent 28-year old Meriwether ________ to head expedition & co-leader was 32-year old _____________. • Assembled crew of expert river men, gunsmiths, carpenters, scouts, & a cook. Had 2 men of mixed Native American and French heritage to serve as interpreters.

The Nation Expands • Expedition left _______ in Spring 1804. • Worked their way up ________ River. • Shoshone woman named __________ joined their group as a guide. • After 18 months and over 4,000 miles, they reached the Pacific Ocean. • Expedition returned in September 1806. • Pike’s expedition: • Before L & C returned, Jefferson sent others to explore. • _____________ led two expeditions between 1805-1807 through upper Mississippi River valley and into present-day state of Colorado.

Federalists Plan to Secede • Many Federalists opposed LA Purchase. • Feared new states would become Republican states (reducing Federalist power). • Federalists in MA planned to secede—or ________--from the Union. • Wanted New England to become a separate “Northern Confederacy.” • In order to succeed, they would need New York. • Turned to Aaron Burr for help b/c Republicans were angry at him for not withdrawing from 1800 election against Jefferson. • When Burr ran for Governor of NY, _________ gave him their support.

Burr and Hamilton • Hamilton never trusted Burr. • Hamilton concerned with rumors that Burr would lead New York out of the Union. • He accused Burr of plotting __________. • When Burr lost election for governor, he blamed Hamilton and challenged him to a duel. • July 1804—met in Weehawken, NJ. • Hamilton hated dueling—said he wouldn’t shoot. • Burr did fire and shot Hamilton. • Hamilton died the next day & Burr fled to avoid arrest.
