  2. Art Criticism Process: • Step 1: Describe • Step 2: Analyze • Step 3: Interpret • Step 4: Judge

  3. Step 1: Describe • This step is the process of simply describing the work. In this step you want to avoid saying what you believe the work is about and simply say what you see. Just the FACTS! • Use the elements of art to help you describe the artwork. Elements of Art Color Line Texture Value Space Shape Form

Write a sentence that describes one or two elements of art in the artwork to the right. • Use the elements of art and be sure to include • Size of the element • Location of where it is • Quantity (how many) • Make your sentences so specific that someone can point to the section you are describing just by reading your sentence. • Example: • There are alternating medium-sized black and white rectangles that repeatalong the bottom half of the entire vessel.

  5. Step 2: Analyze • Analyze – the process of describing the composition of an artwork using the principles of design and taking a look at how they were used. Principles of Design Balance Contrast Emphasis Movement Pattern Rhythm Unity

Analyze the artwork, but explain how the principlesof design are used in the Artwork. • Questions to consider: • How is the artwork constructed or planned out? • Identify some of the similarities throughout the artwork. • Identify some of the points of emphasis in the artwork. • Describe the relationships with the elements or images used. • Explain what effect the surface enrichment creates in the artwork. Ex: The two heads shown create contrast because the one of the left shows rhythm with the stripe pattern, however, the head on the right is solid blue. Dango Series, Ceramic, 8 feet tall

  7. Step 3: Interpret • In this step you should express what you believe the artwork conveys. This can be a communication of ideas, emotions, or aesthetic experience. • Use similes and metaphors the artist used in the artwork.

  8. Aesthetics - Definition • Aesthetics: philosophy that deals with the nature and expression of beauty, as in the fine arts. • Something is aesthetically pleasing, if the viewer sees it as being beautiful.

  9. Step 4: Judgment • This is where you get to give your opinion. Understanding that art can have any purpose it makes easier to receive the communication. • What do you get from the artwork? • What is the purpose of the artwork? • What would other artists say about the artwork? • Is this artwork aesthetically pleasing?
