  3. The Tribute Money • Artist name: Masaccio • Date: 1401-1428 • Place: Brancacci Chapel, Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence, Italy

Type of Media : Fresco • Masaccio painted “The Tribute Money” which was one of his frescos. • Fresco is one type of mural painting. • It uses chiaroscuro techniques which are present in Trinity; the story of “The Tribute Money” is told in three separate scenes within the same fresco. • This technique of telling an entire story in one painting is called a continuous narrative or a linear perspective.

  5. The Story of the Continuous Narrative • A Roman tax collector (in the short orange tunic) demands tax from Jesus (in the pink robe and a blue wrap) and the devotees who don’t have money. Christ told St.Peter (in the turquoise robe and gold wrap) “Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.” Scene #2 Scene #1 Scene #3

Description • I see people, mountains, building, trees, sand, and pond in the artwork. • Elements of design: • Lines: straight, curvy, long, zigzag, wavy • Shapes: circle, square, rectangle, trapezoid, circle, oval • Colors: greyscale colors, earth tones, bright colors like yellow, red, and pink • Values: the sky is gloomy , and it gets brighter as it focuses or moves on to the people • Textures: Smooth ground, silky clothing, rough building and mountains

Analysis • The emphasis or the focal point of the artwork is the Roman tax collector in red because he is in the center of the fresco ,and he is wearing a red robe which is very eye catching. • The mood the artist creates is serious, since he uses greyscale colors and reds and pinks. • I think that the proportion looks unusual because it’s a triplet scenic fresco. • There are a few characters repeated. St. Peter in the turquoise robe and gold wrap is repeated thrice in this art piece. The tax collector in short red robe is also repeated twice. • The mountains and the people pointing create movement. • There is a unity of people, yet there is also a variety since they are wearing different color clothing.

Interpretation • The dark sky makes the mood gloomy, however it changes into serious mood as we look at the crowd of people who look like they are discussing something important. • This artwork could relate to the events in the real world. For example, students were assigned homework, but they didn’t do it. Later, the teacher asks for the homework.

  10. Judgment • I believe that his artwork was a success because it has a unique type of composition, and it has three scenes combined in a fresco. • He uses a uses different style of colors, and he also uses trinity. • He could have a better texturalbackground, and better principles of color.
