  2. You should be able to: • Check Lewis dot structures by looking at total valence electrons. • Identify resonance structures and molecules that do not apply the “octet” rule. • Identify isomers

  3. Drawing VESPR shapes • Lewis dot structures: A, X, E • Way to check: • Add up the total valence electrons associated with all of the atoms in the molecule. • Make sure the number of lone pairs and bonded pairs (on all the molecules) add up to that number.

  4. Try it! • Draw: NF3 • Check: Use the total valence electrons rule. • Use your table and AXE to identify shape.

  5. Is it always an octet? • Draw: BF3 • Draw: SCl6 : Here you may need to use the total valence electrons to figure out how to draw the structure. • Explain how these don’t follow the octet rule.

  6. Resonance • Draw: O3 • Why is it difficult to draw? • Resonance: There are multiple forms of a molecule and the molecule is most stable when all forms are present.

  10. Isomers • Sometimes molecules can have the same molecular formula and more than one structural formula. These are called “isomers”.
