Divided into three Branches • Legislative, Executive, Judicial • Legislative produces Bills • Executive either signs or veto’s that Bill • Judicial uses process called Judicial Review to declare that act either Constitutional or Unconstitutional. • Judicial Review established in Marbury vs. Madison

  3. Legislative Branch • Bi-Cameral Legislature: Which means two houses • House of Reps: 25 years old: 435 Members • Senate: 30 years old: 100 Members

  4. Judicial Branch • Made up of District, Federal, Appellate, and Supreme Courts. • Nine Members of the Supreme Court • They use Concurrent Jurisdiction to work together

  5. Executive Branch • Must be 35 years old • Can veto or line item veto bills • Serves a 4 year term’ • Elected by the Electoral College

  6. Articles • Review the headings for the Articles of the Constitution • Amendments • 18= Prohibition: Temperance Movement • 19= Women’s right to vote • 26= Voting Age: Vietnam • 1-10= Bill of Rights

  7. The Founders • The Constitutional Convention= Held in Philadelphia to replace the Articles of Confederation • Had to pass 9 of the 13 states: Delaware first Rhode Island last; most famous Convention Virginia; where Bill of Rights came about.

  10. Illinois and Its Constitution • Are the Handicapped protected in the Illinois Constitution? Yes, the new Constitution written in 1970 established this. • How many Articles does the Illinois Constitution have? 14 • Constitutionalism: Principle of Government that says Government is not above the law. • Read Article IV section nine a few times tonight. • Read Article V as well.

  12. The General Assembly • Illinois House: 118 Members: 21 Years Old: Two year terms: Reside in the District for at least two years • Illinois Senate: 59 Members: Four year terms • Can override a Governor’s veto if they get 3/5ths of the all members to agree to do so

  13. Governor • Must be 25 years old • Can Veto laws: if he does not veto a law it can go into effect within 60 Calendar days. • 4 year terms • Bills passed by The General Assembly must be presented to the Governor 30 Days after they pass the Bill
